Job Description

The Vice President, Business and Legal Affairs will be primarily responsible for leading business affairs and legal support for the Americas consumer products business within Universal Products & Experiences. UP&E handles the licensing of NBCU film and television properties for merchandising, publishing, video games, digital and interactive uses, and commercial tie-ins/promotions. This role will report to the SVP & Head of Bus/Legal Affairs &Bus Ops.

Salary range: $ 200,000 - $280,000

Qualifications

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Acting as an essential part of the executive leadership team for the AMERICAS, business group working closely with the regional heads and other executive and category leaders to shape and drive the business strategy and goals.
• Represent the global business and legal affairs viewpoint and goals within the Americas, advising on both local strategy and laws as well as global strategy and laws and advise on how to balance and effect such regional/global goals.
• Act as an essential part of the Global Business and Legal Affairs and Business Operations team advising and working on global goals, initiatives and strategies while also representing the Americas' regional perspective.
• Advising and coordinating with category management, marketing, product development, creative, and finance executives at all levels of seniority to identify and resolve business and legal issues (including issues relating to contract interpretation) and provide ongoing counsel, advice, and support.
• Leads and manages the Americas Business and Legal affairs team, providing guidance, support, training, work allocation and mentorship to ensure high performance and professional development as well as providing feedback on performance and workload management.
• Drafting and negotiating a high volume of intellectual property license and service agreements associated with the licensing, distribution, promotion, and marketing of consumer products.
• Advising and enforcing the overall regulatory and corporate policy compliance of merchandising license agreements and licensing partners and the pragmatic mitigation of risk.
• Coordinating and work closely with the contract administration and contract operations teams.
• Working with in-house and outside counsel on trademark, infringement, litigation, collection, government relations, competition law and bankruptcy matters, as needed.
• Build relationships across other NBCU divisions and understand the wider NBCU business functions and goals and identify ways UPE can better work with them, including Universal Destinations and Experiences and Universal Studio Groups
• Research and advise on intellectual property rights and acquisition, talent rights and clearances.
• Advise, improve and innovate internal business and legal processes and operations to maximize efficiency, speed-to-market and improve communication.
• Performance of other duties and/or special projects as needed.

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
• US qualified lawyer based in California
• 10+ years and significant experience as a solicitor, with a strong background in a broad range of entertainment media related legal subject matters – ideally having worked across licensing.
• Demonstrated intellectual property and consumer products licensing experience required.
• A proven people leader who inspires others to follow them.
• A proven communicator with excellent presentation and interpersonal skills.
• Demonstrable experience advising multinational businesses in a complex matrix environment.
• Proven ability and commitment to work both independently and collaboratively with numerous people at all levels throughout the company.
• Demonstrated ability to identify, prioritize and resolve issues quickly and effectively.
• Excellent organizational and administrative skills.
• Sound business judgment, and flexibility/adaptability to manage multiple wide-ranging matters, conflicting deadlines, and new areas of expertise as business needs change.
• Able to think and advise on business strategy to help shape and grow the business including evaluating new businesses/products/growth areas.
