Responsibilities
The NBC-owned station in South Florida is looking for an Assistant News Director whose strength is Content. This person will oversee the daily editorial decisions in this fast-paced, exciting market. The right candidate will focus on winning breaking news and weather, providing depth and context in important stories as well as encouraging engaging and compelling storytelling on multiple platforms. The Assistant News Director will work with the VP/News and management team to develop plans to cover big and breaking stories including but not limited to hurricane coverage, Olympics and political. The role will also assist with a year-round approach to special report planning with an eye towards unique content, promotion, marketing and effective execution on multiple platforms. We are a duopoly newsroom with Telemundo sharing resources and brain power, making us the biggest and best newsroom in South Florida.
• Implements the strategic mission and tactical operations of the newsroom
• Assumes top leadership role in the absence of the VP/News
• Possesses strong news judgment within legal and ethical guidelines
• Have ability to set priorities, be a critical thinker, multi-tasker and problem-solver
• Meets daily with core content managers including digital to review resources, content and coverage plans
• Ensures production resources and expectations are clearly defined and communicated
• Provides frequent feedback to executive producers, producers and reporters
• Looks for innovative approaches to improve newsroom systems for newsgathering
• Identifies daily stories that will benefit from adding depth and maximizing what makes it memorable. Work with EP's/reporters/producers/anchors/digital to make the most of those stories on multiple platforms
• Manages and schedules on-air staff members
• Foster a culture of teamwork, respect and inclusion

Qualifications/Requirements
• Minimum 10 years of experience in newsgathering and/or news production
• Minimum 3 years of experience in key news management role
• B.A. degree or equivalent in areas such as Journalism & Communications, or related field

Desired Characteristics
• Bilingual (Spanish/English) speaking and writing skills
• Investigative journalism experience
