Job Description

KTVL has an immediate opening for Assistant News Director to oversee news content for overall fairness, balance and accuracy. The ideal candidate will oversee production of newscasts and special programming. In this position, you will determine the content and flow of newscasts, work with management and on-air staff to generate and write stories and develop content for our web site. You will work closely with the other Producers, Reporters, Anchors and Assignment Editor on daily news coverage.

The ideal candidate must be proficient in creative writing, copy editing, enterprising stories and be committed to managing compelling newscasts. You must be able to multi-task and have an eye for detail. The ideal candidate will also work with the News Director and other managers to establish newsroom goals and work to develop and further the brand of each station's news programs. The Assistant News Director will work individually with members of the news team to set personal goals and evaluate their performance on a regular basis. As a newsroom leader, the expectation is that the Assistant News Director will lead by example.

Some additional responsibilities of our Assistant News Director will include
• Oversee daily newscasts to ensure we are serving our local communities by sharing relevant information to alert, protect and empower our audiences
• Supervise producers and reporters, as well as, review scripts and provide feedback to encourage powerful storytelling
• Collaborate with News Directors and other station managers to create special segments
• Planning and overseeing continuity into upcoming newscasts
• Aggressively lead breaking news and severe weather coverage
• Work Closely with News Director to carry out news philosophy and direction
• Help News Director focus on alerting, protecting and empowering our viewers
• Review daily newscasts to ensure quality control and brand compliancy
• Handle scheduling of news staff
• Oversee Special projects
• Planning and overseeing continuity into upcoming newscasts
• Assist in the on-going evaluation of personnel
• Help with recruiting and hiring for news department personnel
• Other responsibilities as assigned

What skills do you need to be successful in our role?
• Proven track record of creating compelling and engaging stories across multiple platforms
• Ability to preform well under pressure, experience managing breaking news and meeting strict deadlines
• Ability to identity problems and provide solutions
• A strong commitment to journalistic standards and ethics
• Extraordinary people skills with an emphasis on coaching and motivating
• Strong understanding of how to drive digital traffic
• Minimum of 3 years experience managing in a television news environment or equivalent
• A college degree in Journalism or a related field is preferred
• Strong writing skills and a proven track record for getting results on initiatives
• Ability to plan and adjust personnel during breaking news
• Experience with iNews and Xpression a plus
