Popular Mechanics-part of Hearst's Enthusiast Group-is searching for an energetic News Editor brimming with creativity and curiosity to assign, edit, and publish daily news content across our site, social feeds, and other channels.

Working with the guidance and supervision of Pop Mech's Deputy Editor and the Enthusiast Group's News Director, the News Editor has a deep knowledge of and thirst for the latest developments in science, and has a proven track record of transforming an endless well of ideas into engaging stories that capture the widest audience possible. This role is crucial to our team, demanding an unstoppable creative force who can unearth compelling stories from every corner of Pop Mech's world-science, tech, engineering, space, math, defense, aviation, energy, and more-and produce a high volume of digital news stories each day.

The ideal candidate will excel in identifying trending topics and current events that resonate with Pop Mech's readers, offering irresistible information that educates and empowers them to lead more interesting and capable lives. This editor will take the initiative to craft and fine-tune stories that meet and exceed our news team's primary goal: boosting the daily growth of our organic audience.

The role is based in the Enthusiast Group headquarters in Easton, Pennsylvania, with an in-office presence of 3 days a week; we will not be able to accommodate remote workers.

What you'll do:
* Collaborate closely with the senior editorial staff, including Pop Mech's Deputy Editor and News Director, to conceptualize, execute, and publish daily content that aligns with established performance metrics.
* Cultivate a dynamic network of freelance writers and contributors, guaranteeing a diverse pool of talent that enhances our storytelling and expert coverage.
* Constantly monitor news, cutting-edge research, ideas, conversations, and the latest viral trends happening in our core topic areas, ensuring our stories are as timely as they are relevant.
* Obsessively workshop and craft attention-grabbing display copy to reach our current audience while also thinking of how to reach new users.
* Produce stories daily while simultaneously creating longer works for our site, magazine, social feeds, and other channels as needed.

What you'll bring:
* At least four years of proven experience in editing, writing, creating, and distributing digital content, ideally with a rich background or deep interest in fields including, but not limited to, science, technology, machines, outdoors, DIY, military, and maker culture-any place curiosity leads.
* Exceptional skills in editing and writing, consistently delivering clear, compelling, and accurate content on deadline.
* Capability and experience in editing a large volume of articles daily to fulfill our overall content goals.
* Demonstrated ability to upload, format, and manage digital content within various Content Management Systems (CMS).
* Proficiency in using analytics tools such as Google Analytics and Parse.ly to monitor traffic data and audience engagement, using insights to inform content strategy.
* A genuine passion and enthusiasm for all things science and technology.
* Strong organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail, along with the ability to collaboratively work within a team to achieve shared goals.
* Flexibility to manage feedback from multiple parties and a willingness to adapt to fast-changing priorities
* The capacity to juggle and progress multiple projects simultaneously without compromising on deadlines or content quality.
* A minimum of a Bachelor's degree.

The base salary for this role is between $62,310 - $63,800. The actual base pay offered is dependent upon many factors, such as: transferable skills, work experience, business needs and market demands. The base pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future.

This is a position covered under the Writers Guild of America, East, Collective Bargaining Agreement.
