Job Description
Hearst Enthusiast Group (Runner's World, Bicycling, Popular Mechanics, Biography.com and Best Products) is looking for a Features Editor to execute stories that support the Enthusiast Group's print, Apple News+, loyalty, and membership goals and that make an impact within and beyond our endemic communities.

The Features Editor will combine the craft of storytelling with sound journalism principles to pitch, assign, and edit-or occasionally write-stories that range from deeply reported narratives to fast-turn features to thoroughly informative packages. Using a data-first mindset, you will discover and develop features that meet established success metrics and impact our readers.

Please note: This position may be based in Hearst's New York City or Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania offices, though priority will be given to candidates able to work in our Easton, PA, location. We will not be able to consider remote candidates. Resumes must be submitted in PDF format with a cover letter, salary requirements, and a link to a portfolio of work.

What you'll do
• Use data signals to identify and execute feature stories that meet success metrics across all Enthusiast Group brands, with a focus on Popular Mechanics
• Pitch, assign, and edit feature stories as needed to the highest level of excellence for 14 print issues a year, Apple News+, and websites across brands (primarily PopMech, BI, RW)
• Work with writers, photographers, designers, fact checkers, and other contributors to tell diverse stories (across multiple platforms as needed) while hitting budget and deadline targets
• Cultivate relationships within relevant communities to identify story ideas and new contributors
• Collaborate with coworkers to brainstorm and develop new ideas and coverage opportunities
• Build features in the print and digital CMS environments
• Other duties as needed

What You'll Bring:
• Three-plus years of relevant professional experience at a consumer magazine, website, or newspaper, with a portfolio of work that includes reported narrative features, investigations and other examples of high-quality longform journalism.
• A sophisticated understanding of the elements of effective narrative storytelling
• An ability to articulate feedback to writers and other contributors with clarity and sensitivity
• An ability and willingness to be flexible in a deadline-driven work environment, to adapt to strategy changes, and to take on new challenges when the need and opportunity arises
• Existing relationships with best-in-class feature writers in the areas of science/tech, sports, fitness, health, and general interest
• A strategic mindset and experience with hitting strategy goals, as well as an ability and willingness to use data to inform creative decisions
• A flair for impactful display copy, and an obsession with story structure
• An endless supply of ideas
• An innate curiosity for how the world works
• An affinity for Popular Mechanics and the stories we tell (preferred but not required)
• A bachelor's degree in English, liberal arts, journalism, or a related field

The base salary for this role if hired in Easton is between $62,310 and $69,000. If hired in NY, the range is between $67,000 and $69,000. The actual base pay offered is dependent upon many factors, such as: transferable skills, work experience, business needs and market demands.
