What will you do once you are here? As the Planning Editor, you will create and produce must watch segments, plan news coverage and be the lead on our LIVE Fox5 Field Trips, among other LIVE special events.
Daily duties also include researching original story ideas, booking major guests, conducting interviews and presenting them in a compelling way. You will meet daily with News Managers for next day preview and the planning of future segments. Understand the logistics of the assignment desk and the needs of a newscast through a producer's eyes. Work with the digital team in developing stories, segments and projects to work in conjunction with newscasts. Responsible for gathering story info from various news sources and determining the newsworthiness. Make decisions on what stories to cover that will be timely, news worthy and break news on our broadcast and digital platforms. Have the ability to alter segments as news breaks and changes. Keep news staff apprised of breaking news and changes in assignments. Assist field crews in story development/completion; this includes, but is not limited to, providing directions to a location, providing contact information for a story, providing background information on a story, making preliminary calls to set-up a story. Communicate story developments to producers, field crews and managers Communicate with affiliates to ensure continuity in coverage. Develop and maintain professional relationships with sources. This includes, but is not limited to Public Information Officers, corporate spokespersons and public relations personnel. Stay informed on current events, pop culture, journalistic practices and changing industry trends. Ability to take direction, think critically under pressure, and work professionally as part of a cohesive team and individually within specific time constraints. Friendly, respectful and collaborative. Positive attitude, good judgment and excellent communication skills. Interact effectively and professionally with on-air staff, off-air staff, production and technical crews, and management. Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in broadcast journalism or other related field. Previous assignment desk and/or producing experience preferred. Must be well organized and able to manage multiple projects. Must demonstrate outstanding news judgment and good news writing skills. Must be able to deal effectively with people. Must be able to work well in a fast-paced environment. Working knowledge of newsroom computers and the Internet. Must be able to work overtime and varied hours, including weekends, holidays.
