Job Description
FOX 44 is seeking a News Director to lead the News department at our Waco, TX station. The News Director will have full oversight of News operations for KWKT -TV/KYLE-TV. This forward-thinking individual will oversee and manage day-to-day operation of our live newscasts, including news, weather, and sports, as well as Fox44News.com, and all other digital, mobile, and social media news assets for station.
• Manages all aspects of the News Department (other than Production).
• Plans and manages staffing, training, and performance evaluations for the News Department.
• Makes decisions regarding hiring, evaluation, promotion, and termination of employees.
• Develops news coverage strategy for the station and its website.
• Critiques newscasts daily to correct errors, improve coverage and provide mentoring feedback to news staff.
• Assigns projects to staff and verifies that deadlines are being met.
• Ensures achievement of viewer rating goals.
• Evaluates news gathering equipment and makes recommendations to chief engineer and general manager for what is needed to produce quality live newscasts and special news programming.
• Responds to news coverage questions and viewer inquiries regarding news.
• Works closely with general manager and department managers to ensure station's objectives are being met.
• Works closely with general manager and business assistant to assure station compliance with FCC Public Inspection File rules, regarding community issues and news programming that addresses those issues.
• Available to work extended hours if needed, including nights and weekends.
• Fluency in English with excellent communication skills, both verbal and written. Bilingual with Spanish is a plus, but not required.

The successful candidate will be a hands-on news manager with a proven track record for coaching and developing talent, possessing solid journalism skills and owning the big news story. Equally important is having an aggressive severe weather philosophy, and a passion for covering breaking news.

A minimum of 5 years' experience as a news manager and more than 10 years' experience in a news operation preferred. Prior experience with online and social media is required, as is a Bachelor's Degree in Broadcast Journalism, Communications or an equivalent combination of education and work experience. Candidate should be a problem solver and quick thinker to resolve existing issues and to work around problems that arise during live news.
