Overview

Investopedia, a leading provider of financial news, analysis and education, is seeking a Senior News Director to help lead its growing and dynamic news team. The position reports to the Executive Editor for News and is based in Dotdash Meredith's New York City office.

The Senior News Director will play a leading role in setting the daily news coverage agenda, devising longer-term coverage priorities, hiring and managing reporters and editors, and overseeing projects that enhance the team's ability to deliver uniquely valuable coverage that helps Investopedia's audience understand how news developments affect their finances. This is a hand-on role that will require the person in it to regularly edit everything from breaking news stories to deeply reported enterprise pieces.

The ideal candidate for this position has worked as a financial journalist for at least a decade, managed teams of reporters and editors, served as a newsroom leader, and devised and implemented strategies that improve the quality of the journalism produced and its resonance with the target audience.

Responsibilities include:
• Manage reporters and editors: This includes direct oversight of staff members and running the entire news team in the absence of the executive editor. You will play a lead role in training, mentoring and inspiring the entire staff.
• Set coverage priorities: Working closely with the executive editor and other editors on the team, you will help define reporting priorities, from real-time coverage of breaking news to more-ambitious enterprise pieces. You will also help identify opportunities to cover the news in innovative ways to ensure that Investopedia is providing unique and valuable insights to its global audience.
• Assign, edit and publish articles: You will handle a wide range of articles, from breaking news to in-depth features, which will require an in-depth knowledge of copy flow and content management systems.
• Recruit, hire and onboard: Working closely with executive editor, other editors and HR, you will manage the news team's hiring and onboarding efforts. The news team is growing and aims to hire a team with a wide range of experiences and backgrounds. You will oversee recruiting and evaluation of candidates, as well as set strategy for onboarding new members of the news team.
• Manage budget and projects: You will be responsible for the news team's budget, working closely with the executive editor and others to keep track of spending and identify spending priorities. You will also spearhead projects related to workflow and tools that help the journalists do their jobs.
• Liaise with other teams: You will work with editors from other departments within Investopedia to coordinate efforts to produce valuable content. You will also develop partnerships with other publications and business units within Dotdash Meredith to ensure the news team is leveraging resources and expertise to enhance the work of the team.

Qualifications
• Strong news judgment and a passion for financial news: You have a deep understanding of business, economics, finance and markets and a keen eye for newsworthy stories and unique coverage angles.
• Strong writing, editing and communication skills: You have impeccable skills as a writer and editor, and are able to clearly communicate story ideas and deliver constructive feedback to reporters.
• Minimum of 10 years of experience as a financial journalist: You have worked as a financial journalist for at least a decade and taken on positions of increasing responsibility over that time.
• Minimum of 5 years of experience as a manager and news leader: You have managed a team of business journalists for several years, with a proven track record of improving the quality of the team's work and delivering impactful reporting. Ideally you have managed both small teams of reporters and large teams of people performing various functions.
• Experience hiring top-notch journalists: You have a strong track record of hiring both entry-level and more-experienced reporters and editors.
• Track record of creativity and strategy development: You have a demonstrated ability to think creatively when addressing challenges and opportunities, as well as experience crafting and implementing new strategies. You have experience working with a wide range of stakeholders across departments to devise strategies.
• Highly organized and hard working: You are able to effectively and calmly handle a wide range of tasks, and also possess a tireless work ethic.
