Job Description
Overview

The Business and Legal Affairs department is responsible for the negotiation and drafting of all produced, commissioned and acquired content used worldwide by Discovery services whether linear or digital. It also provides all legal review services relating to the company's content from script and rough cut reviews through to media rights analysis, rights waivers and company usage requests from all lines of the company's business globally.

Responsibilities
• First line responsibility for keeping the company's rights management systems updated and accurate
• Research, review and interpret key provisions in programming agreements and the company's rights management systems
• Provide accurate and timely rights clearance interpretation and advice to the company's global business units supporting existing and new business services
• Advise marketing and promotion teams on content editing rights to support network, digital and social media activations across multiple platforms
• Review promotional campaign footage and provide legal advice ensuring material is compliant with copyright law, regulation and elemental rights restrictions
• Review and advise on talent agreements ensuring image and other approval rights are met and report on residuals and participations
• Analyse, record and advise on underlying source materials for repackaged content titles
• Record, interpret and apply rights waivers within the company systems and in providing rights clearance advice
• Advise on the use of ancillary rights such as consumer products and download to own to support full exploitation of company assets
• Research, negotiate and relicense footage rights due to expire to maintain and refresh library content
• Assist in the research and reporting of title availability for third party output arrangements
• Assist in rights analysis to support new business development
• Perform quality control checks to maintain accurate data in the company's rights management systems
• Provide necessary reporting to the business on areas such as elemental rights expiry and other programme related notifications
• Any other duties as determined by the BLA Manager.

Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in Law/Paralegal certification with experience in intellectual property and copyright
• Prior rights management, business affairs or legal experience required
• Previous experience in a similar function or global organization
• Strong IT skills and understanding of working with databases a necessity
• Experience in using Rights Logic an advantage
• Experience handling business negotiations for programming transactions particularly rights licensing;
• Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively at all levels within the company.
• Clear and concise communicator (both orally and written) and able to summarize complex information
• Well organised with excellent attention to detail
• Ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment on multiple projects and stay calm under pressure.
• The ideal candidate will be a bright, diligent self-starter who thinks and communicates clearly, is well organized, proactive, and grasps concepts quickly.
