The Director, Human Resources, Baseball Operations, serves as a key strategic and operational leader responsible for the full spectrum of HR functions within Baseball Operations, including colleague relations, talent acquisition and diversity, performance and talent management, total rewards and compensation, policy development, and compliance. This individual is instrumental in shaping and driving a people-first culture that aligns with the Club's mission, values, and strategic objectives.
The Director partners closely with baseball operations senior leadership and departmental heads to establish and execute forward-thinking HR strategies that strengthen organizational effectiveness and colleague engagement. This includes playing a central role in strategic planning, organizational development, and the evolution of programs that promote an inclusive, high-performing, and values-driven workplace.

Key Responsibilities:
• Partner with leadership to develop and implement human resources strategies aligned with the Club's overall strategic objectives, with a strong emphasis on cultivating a high-performing and inclusive culture. Lead initiatives in talent management and development, organizational design, performance management, coaching, retention, and colleague engagement through the design and execution of effective and scalable HR practices and processes within Baseball Operations.
• Serve as the primary liaison between Baseball Operations and the corporate HR and Shared Services teams on benefits, payroll, compliance, and other HR functions.
• Provide daily HR support by advising staff on personnel policies, conflict resolution, and professional conduct.
• Lead improvements to the Baseball Operations staff onboarding and off-boarding processes in collaboration with department leaders.
• Maintain an up-to-date directory of all Baseball Operations colleagues and consultants and administer all MLB-related processes accordingly.
• Coordinate with IT to ensure all communication tools (email lists, directories, etc.) are accurate and current.
• Contribute to business unit restructuring, workforce planning, and succession planning efforts.
• Support talent acquisition efforts to attract, retain, and develop top talent, ensuring a pipeline of diverse and qualified candidates.
• Meet with President, Baseball Operations and General Manager regularly to identify upcoming staffing needs and produce vetted candidate lists for all potential open positions.
• Deliver salary benchmarking data from Major League Baseball and relevant industries to support staff compensation decisions.
• Partner with IT to develop a unified software solution for hiring managers to evaluate job candidates.
• Conduct ad-hoc analyses of Baseball Operations staffing across the league to identify trends and make peer comparisons.
• Oversee the processing of Detroit Tigers' Employment Agreements.
• Collaborate with management and colleagues to improve staff learning and development, boost morale and connection, and enhance productivity and retention.
• Manage the distribution, acknowledgment, and tracking of Major League Baseball (MLB) policies, ensuring timely dissemination to all relevant staff and colleagues; monitor compliance, maintain accurate records, and follow up as needed to ensure organizational adherence to league requirements.
• Ensure accurate and timely input of data into Major League Baseball's systems (EBIS) and maintain compliance with all related MLB processes, policies, and reporting requirements.
• Maintain a thorough understanding of the Player Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) and effectively administer HR-related provisions, including benefits and entitlements, for both Major League and Minor League players, ensuring compliance and alignment with league standards.
• Provide training to senior leadership and staff on compliance-related topics, including discrimination, harassment, wage and hour laws, and colleague relations best practices.
• Oversee the accurate input, maintenance, and management of colleague data within Workday, ensuring data integrity across all HR processes; serve as the primary point of contact for troubleshooting system issues, coordinating with internal stakeholders and Workday support to resolve problems efficiently and enhance system functionality.
• Monitor changes in laws and regulations affecting HR practices and update policies and procedures accordingly.
• Oversee and facilitate all immigration-related processes for staff, including visa applications, renewals, and work authorizations; liaise with legal counsel, league representatives, and government agencies to ensure compliance with immigration laws and timely processing of documentation.
• Collaborate with legal counsel to address compliance issues and respond to inquiries or complaints from regulatory agencies.
• Develop, generate, and maintain HR reports and dashboards to support data-driven decision-making; analyze workforce metrics such as headcount, turnover, diversity, and performance trends, ensuring accuracy and timely distribution to leadership and relevant stakeholders.
• Assist with the planning and execution of events and programs, as directed.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• Bachelor's degree in human resources or related discipline.
• Minimum seven (7) years of progressive human resources experience.
• Strong understanding of human resource management principles, practices, and procedures; and thorough knowledge of relevant employment laws and compliance parameters.
• Able to work autonomously on all aspects of executing responsibilities of the position.
• Effective judgment, problem solving and decision-making skills.
• Strong leadership skills, including excellent written and oral communication skills, and strong interpersonal skills.
• Highly self-motivated and directed, with keen attention to detail, and proven analytical, evaluative, and problem-solving abilities.
• Ability to execute strategically and tactically across the organization.
• Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment with quick deadlines and multiple demands.
• Must be able to work with confidential information and exercise good judgment.
• Highly organized, detail driven with ability to prioritize workload.
• Ability to make accurate and sound analyses and evaluations of personnel problems.
• Working knowledge of local, state, and federal labor/EEO laws.
• Experience with Workday, preferred.
• Ability to work days, nights, weekends and holidays.
• Ability to travel as needed to support organizational initiatives or operational needs.
