Technical Lead – AI & Workflow Automation
POSITION TITLE: Technical Lead – AI & Workflow Automation
Location: Hybrid
ABOUT THE ROLE:
We're building a small, high-impact team focused on using AI, intelligent agents, and automation to transform manual business workflows into scalable, efficient systems. As the Tech Lead, you'll lead the technical design and implementation of automation solutions - from parsing unstructured client input to orchestrating order creation across backend services. You'll be about 80% hands-on coding and 20% team leadership, balancing technical depth with mentorship and delivery. You'll work closely with operations, engineering, and product teams to identify repetitive processes, prototype AI-driven solutions, and bring them into production. This is a role for someone who's equal parts innovator, builder, and team leader.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Own end-to-end delivery of automation and AI projects - from problem definition to deployment.
• Design and implement AI- or rules-based automation systems to reduce or eliminate manual workflows.
• Collaborate cross-functionally to identify and prioritize high-impact automation opportunities.
• Prototype and evaluate AI models, LLM-based agents, and workflow orchestration pipelines.
• Integrate solutions with existing systems via REST APIs, message queues, or microservices.
• Lead and mentor a small team of engineers (senior, mid, and test roles).
• Maintain technical quality and reliability, ensuring clean, maintainable code.
• Stay informed on emerging AI tools, frameworks, and APIs to continuously expand the team's capabilities.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• 7+ years of experience in software engineering, including 2+ years leading small teams or projects.
• Strong proficiency in Python, with experience in frameworks like FastAPI, Flask, or Django.
• Familiarity with AI/ML frameworks and APIs (OpenAI API, LangChain, Hugging Face, AWS Bedrock, etc.).
• Experience with data ingestion, text parsing, or automation workflows (e.g., NLP, OCR, or RPA).
• Understanding of REST APIs, event-driven systems, and microservice architecture.
• Ability to translate ambiguous problems into technical solutions.
• Strong communication skills and a collaborative, hands-on mindset.
NICE TO HAVE:
• Experience deploying LLMs or AI agents in production environments.
• Familiarity with workflow orchestration tools (e.g., AWS Step Functions, Temporal, or Airflow).
• Exposure to data labeling, fine-tuning, or prompt engineering.
• Prior work in enterprise automation or AI operations environments.
NOTE:
Python is our preferred language for AI and automation work, but equivalent experience in another modern language (e.g., TypeScript/Node.js, Go, or C#) and a willingness to work in Python are perfectly acceptable.
This role is based in Los Angeles, California and the base pay range for this role is $191,250 - $225,000.00 per year. Actual amounts will vary depending on education, skills, experience, and geographic location.
