Writer, Space & Science (CNN)

The Job
CNN is committed to the highest quality cross-platform editorial coverage of global space and science topics. We are searching for a writer to contribute and expand our daily digital coverage.

The Daily

The Writer will work closely with the Space and Science Editor and others on the Science team to pitch and write breaking news, features, enterprise, newsletters and other content across a variety of science topic areas.

The ideal candidate is a strong writer and a deep source of creative concepts and ideas that will push CNN's storytelling forward.

When it comes to breaking news and trending stories, this person is comfortable with reaching out to various departments and sources for quotes and statements in order to produce stories quickly and accurately. They must also demonstrate a talent for longer form deep enterprise reporting and narrative storytelling.

The position requires the candidate to work self-sufficiently and show good independent editorial judgment, but also effectively communicate with editors and other teams and partners.
• Pitch ideas and write compelling and original stories that adhere to CNN's editorial mission, especially its Science initiatives.
• Demonstrate a deep curiosity and talent for writing about science topics (space missions, astronomy, paleontology, paleoanthropology, archeology and more).
• Understand how to read embargoed research and published studies to find the news.
• Research and develop information sources and build upon a reliable source network.
• Be accountable for assigned content, from reporting, writing, production and publication to ongoing refreshes and updates.
• Help ensure the optimum performance of editorial by refining headlines, tease images and social language.
• Work closely with Programming teams to ensure the flow and maximum performance of our content around the site and on social networks.
• Write a variety of story types, including developing multimedia ideas and product initiatives. Consistently meet agreed upon deadlines.
• Produce content in various management systems (CMS, newsletters, etc)
• Reporting research, sometimes for other writers and projects. Fact-checking of one's own stories and possibly others.
• Edit others' work on occasion and develop editing skills.

The Essentials
• College degree in journalism or related.
• 5+ years of relevant professional full-time writing experience with a media organization
• Clear understanding of the writing mechanics of news and other types of storytelling
• Excellent writing and research skills
• This position is required to work in person at one of our locations in the United States WarnerMedia requires anyone working in our workplaces in the US to be vaccinated against COVID-19.
