The Job

CNN Digital is looking for an interdisciplinary editor who will help take our visual and data-driven storytelling to the next level. This editor will be part of the Visuals team and partner closely with Visuals senior leadership and key partners across the newsroom to identify opportunities, build partnerships, coordinate projects that span teams, and edit some of our most ambitious, innovative journalism. The ideal candidate gets excited thinking about effective workflows, is a systems thinker who cares deeply about team culture, and can handle big picture brainstorming as well as the day-to-day details of collaboration in a large newsroom.

The Daily
• Pitch, edit and manage visual and data-driven projects, often working across multiple Visuals teams and news desks
• Manage projects with multiple stakeholders, including creating project roadmaps, setting deadlines, establishing feedback cadence, maintaining high journalistic and visual standards, and advocating for reader needs
• Partner with Executive Editor of Visuals and other senior leadership to identify opportunities for refining team processes and advocate for our work across the organization
• Partner closely with CNN's programming and social teams to identify creative ways to highlight visual storytelling
• Take an audience-driven approach to evolve how we reach our readers, and track engagement and success
• Supervise a rotating group of graphics journalists and artists focused on creating a powerful and consistent presence for Visual journalism on homepages, apps and social media
• May be responsible for managing staff or freelancers
• Help senior leadership refine and document team processes, how-tos, templates and other resources
• Organize and facilitate training opportunities for the global Visuals team

The Essentials
• 4+ years of newsroom experience or comparable editing/project management experience
• Significant experience with creative, visual-driven storytelling in a newsroom environment
• Varsity level communication skills with a track record of collaborating across teams and disciplines
• Lots of ideas about what would make our work more impactful, serve our audiences better, and how we can work together more effectively
• A desire to push digital storytelling forward and the ability to think expansively about how we use our medium in the service of journalism. You put the journalism first and are always asking ''what's the best way to tell this story?''
• Impeccable news judgment and the ability to prioritize diplomatically
• Leadership, editing or project management experience is preferred, but it does not have to be ''official'' or take the form of direct reports
• A sharp eye for visual storytelling in myriad forms, including a strong grasp of UX, typography, layout, color, motion, interaction design and accessibility.
• Ability to share feedback in generative and constructive ways
• Experience with analytics and tools for tracking engagement metrics
• Experience with common tools like Github, the command line, CMS, Adobe Illustrator, ai2html, photo and motion graphics editing software, Figma and other prototyping tools
