Job Description

The Newsdesk Producer, Futures position is an integral part of the newsgathering operations for both television and digital. This person will be looking ahead to multiplatform coverage plans for all the big stories in the region that would play out on CNN International, CNN USA networks and our digital sites. It is a position that is vital in ensuring that as a network we are planning for the next big story and being proactive with coverage, putting us in a stronger position to remain competitive.

A proactive, editorial and meticulously organized individual, the News Desk Producer, Future will directly work with and report to the Senior Planning Editor in HK. He/She will also be working closely with Senior Director of Futures planning and that team in Atlanta, Futures planning counterparts in London and Abu Dhabi, digital and programming to execute cross platform news coverage. The FNDP will be expected to support the Senior Planning Editor in HK, the Asia newsgathering teams but also execute deployments during breaking news in conjunction with the news desk, Asia Pacific, London and Atlanta Directors of Coverage (DOCs) and the Senior Director of Futures. They will also be responsible for ensuring communications between Atlanta, London, Digital, and programming remain as seamless as possible.

What will you be doing?
• Strong Editorial Sense: Be proactive and assist in the editorial development of the planning process, identify opportunities to break news, enterprise original and distinctive content and work with all platforms from TV, Digital, Social and others to ensure maximum coverage and promotion. Able to identify stories and plan coverage accordingly. Strong and deep knowledge of Asia a plus, but also has a wide understanding of global themes and stories. Pre- and post-production capability. Past track record of creative and distinctive storytelling a plus.
• Cross-platform Planning: Assist in the planning of coverage of key themes, scheduled news events and breaking news. Working in step with the expectations of the entire News Group: digital, social and broadcast.
• Field Assignment Execution: Assist in planning and executing field assignments, both pre-planned and for breaking news – including, but not limited to pitching, budgeting, logistics, contact building.
• Logistical Support: Keeping across, anticipating and owning the things that make us able to react quickly (visas, logistics, accreditations) are all up to date. CNN coverage should not be compromised because of logistical impediments to fast reactions of teams to breaking news and events.
• Distinctiveness: To find ways to make CNN coverage stand out from our competitors.
• Collaboration: Co-ordinating closely and building relationships across platforms in CNN – digital, social, broadcast, the regional, international and US bureaus – and meeting their coverage needs.
• Breaking News: Responding quickly and proactively to priorities across the News Group. Assisting the Senior Planning Editor, Dayside DOC and Senior Director of Futures in ensuring a breaking news event/story is covered properly on the staffing, logistics, transmission fronts as well work with field teams to move the editorial forward.
• Planned Projects: Ensuring coverage plans are well defined and full details are outlined in documented fashion.
• Safety: Needs awareness of safety issues facing teams on the field and working in step with the Senior Planning Editor, Directors of Coverage, Senior Director of Futures and Security representatives to ensure safety of staff is a priority.
