Purpose of the Role

The dynamic CNN Digital team based in Hong Kong is looking for a Director to oversee, direct and shape its Asia-Pacific coverage and inspire the team and wider organisation to continue to produce high quality impactful journalism.

This is a role for an experienced digital editorial leader who has a passion for the region and for news, outstanding editorial judgement and extensive experience in leading a strong diverse team of journalists in a high pressure and fast moving environment.

They will help shape and communicate the editorial content strategy and lead the execution of that strategy in the region, coordinating with newsgathering and other digital teams globally to ensure accurate and fast breaking news coverage as well as the creation and execution of distinctive content.

The Director, CNN Digital APAC is responsible for building meaningful, direct and lasting relationship with audiences in the APAC region by driving innovation and identifying new opportunities. They will be an advocate for an inclusive work culture that embraces diversity at all levels.

Based in Hong Kong, the position reports to the Executive Editor, International and will work closely with the Senior Digital Director for EMEA as well as the Director for International Programming.

The role will partner with the APAC Leadership team locally including the Hong Kong Bureau Chief, and wider newsgathering and commercial teams taking a lead role in representing CNN Digital across the region.

Areas of Responsibility
• Day-to day running of the APAC team including fast and accurate breaking news, analysis and distinctive content.
• Lead a team of journalists across region and oversee their work as well as being responsible for their career development
• Implement work culture that is rooted in inclusive behaviour and creates a diverse workforce.
• Use data to build meaningful and intentional relationships with audiences across APAC and beyond to drive growth.
• Along with colleagues from newsgathering, shape the network's coverage out of the region and ensure content is produced, optimized and delivered in an integrated way across platforms, with special focus on mobile first content.
• Ensure that editorial quality and standards are met and delivered across all stories.
• Encourage innovation with a big emphasis on mobile, interactive, data visualization in collaboration with the digital teams globally.
• Communicate clearly and effectively with colleagues and stakeholders across the network to ensure that all relevant parties are well informed.
• Work with Executive Editor to advance newsgathering functionality and processes and continue to strengthen regional bureaus as the model of an integrated digital news operation.

SELECTION CRITERIA
• 10+ years of relevant working experience in the media, digital media or news industry
• Significant experience in managing and leading a regional or global digital editorial team.
• Exceptional knowledge and understanding of global news with expertise in the Asia-Pacific region.
• Strong editorial vision and drive and with proven expertise in digital editorial strategies.
• Demonstrated experience and expertise in digital best practices, site and social programming.
• Proven track record for creativity and innovation and the production of distinctive multi-platform content in coordiantion with multiple departments/teams.
• Able to execute against deadline – including speed on breaking news stories.
• Exceptional understanding of real- and longer term metrics and how to use them for audience relationship.
• Creative, innovative and good at spotting and keeping up with emerging digital trends.
• Fast, succinct and accurate written communication skills.
• Asian language skills a bonus but fluent written and spoken English is essential.
• Capable of working across time zones and cross-culture.
• Flexible and able to operate in a fast-changing and exciting environment.
