Job Description
CBS News is looking for a collaborative, creative, driven Senior Coordinating Producer to develop, produce, and lead all aspects of breakthrough coverage on crime, public safety, guns, and policing for multiple platforms. The candidate will be a shown leader who knows how to manage competitive coverage on a reporting beat, as well as urgently contribute to breaking news coverage, while maintaining the highest standards in news gathering and production. This person will work directly with CBS News and Stations correspondents, producers, photographers, and managers to facilitate collaboration, create and maximize winning content, and manage resources. The candidate should demonstrate a passion for and an in-depth understanding of this beat and have a record of successfully leading original reporting and breaking news coverage related to this content genre across platforms.

Key Responsibilities:
• Research and develop unique story ideas to report on crime, public safety, guns, and policing issues, with focus on solutions, policies, and initiatives targeted at mitigating crime.
• Facilitate highly effective collaboration and frequent communication inside the crime/public safety team, and with partners and managers across CBS News and Stations. Create strong working partnerships with the CBS News investigative unit, data journalism team and news justice team.
• Create compelling content that's customized to serve the needs of multiple shows, streaming, and other platforms across CBS News and Stations.
• Develop a long-term editorial strategy, including marquee enterprise reporting, as well as tactics for rapid response to breaking news.
• Manage daily and long-term workflow and content execution of staff, including assignments, timelines, and resource prioritization.
• Produce and write stories independently and in partnership with others.
• Coordinate editorial processes, including pitches, story development, script approval, fact checking and legal review. Ensure completeness, balance, and diverse points of view in reporting, in addition to accurate, well-documented, bulletproof content.
• Coordinate production elements, such as graphic design, digital layout, and talent presentation in the field or in studio.
• Lead team in engaging with content marketing efforts on all platforms.
• Demonstrate advanced newsgathering and investigative tactics to acquire information and story elements, such as developing relationships, cultivating sources, strategically landing interviews, navigating open records laws, and using computer-assisted reporting techniques.
• Understand, interpret, and simplify data and other complex information, and then communicate the points and themes to the team in a clear, concise way.
• Urgently develop and implement angles to elevate breaking news and major story coverage.
• May require producing in the field from various locations as needed for the gathering and presentation of stories.
• Must be willing to work an unpredictable and flexible schedule as assigned.

Basic Qualifications:
• Experience: a proven track record of success in crime/public safety/guns/policing coverage
• At least 5 years of continuous content leadership experience
• Leadership: proven ability to inspire a diverse journalism team, fostering collaboration across multiple news groups
• Knowledge: deep understanding of crime/public safety reporting
• Travel: willingness to travel as needed

Desired Qualifications:
• Bachelor's degree in broadcast journalism, communications, law/justice/law enforcement fields, or related.
• Ability to work a hybrid schedule from a CBS bureau
• Relationship Building: strong interpersonal and communication skills to cultivate and maintain valuable relationships
• Strategic Vision: strong critical thinking and analytical skills to execute strategy and identify growth opportunities

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Hiring Salary Range: $160,000.00 - 190,000.00.

The hiring salary range for this position applies to New York, California, Colorado, Washington state, and most other geographies. Starting pay for the successful applicant depends on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education. The benefits available for this position include medical, dental, vision, 401(k) plan, life insurance coverage, disability benefits, tuition assistance program and PTO or, if applicable, as otherwise dictated by the appropriate Collective Bargaining Agreement.
