Job Description

CBS News is seeking a meticulous Fact Checker for its newly developed CBS News Confirmed team. Many factors present threats to our credibility and to the trust our audiences place in us. As technology changes at an unprecedented pace, this dedicated team will ensure that the high journalistic standards pioneered by CBS News are upheld.

The ideal candidate will be passionate about politics and will work with our team of fact-checkers to help us achieve our goal of combating mis/disinformation in our storytelling. They will have the opportunity to work on a wide range of editorial initiatives using cutting edge fact-checking technology and products.

The duties of a Fact Checker for the CBS News Confirmed unit will include, but will not be limited to:
• Verifying that all facts and claims in a story are accurate and are represented in a non-biased way
• Reading through notes, audio and transcripts
• Checking court records, video footage, research documents, any materials that may or may not have been used while researching and reporting on our network
• Identifying holes in stories and discovering misleading claims with the use of different platforms and techniques
• Researching and writing original, high-quality fact checks while following strict editorial standards and tight deadlines for a mix of audiences

Basic Qualifications:
• 5+ years of professional newsroom, fact-checking, or other editorial experience
• Experience in political research with a strong understanding of the political landscape

Desired Qualifications:
• Excellent writing, editing, data verification and fact checking skills – doing so while under deadline for short turnaround news broadcast items
• Strong analytical and critical thinking skills and can remain impartial while writing on complex and sensitive topics
• Familiarity with Deepfake Detection System techniques
• Ability to discover and flag misleading claims using different platforms and techniques
• Ability to work in a fast-paced newsroom setting and adjust efficiently to changing assignments
• Ability to work closely with editorial, management and other key partners
• Ability to interact with a wide variety of people using diplomacy tact and discretion
• Strong writing, grammar and AP style background.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Hiring Salary Range: $90,000.00 - 100,000.00.

The hiring salary range for this position applies to New York, California, Colorado, Washington state, and most other geographies. Starting pay for the successful applicant depends on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education. The benefits available for this position include medical, dental, vision, 401(k) plan, life insurance coverage, disability benefits, tuition assistance program and PTO or, if applicable, as otherwise dictated by the appropriate Collective Bargaining Agreement.
