Job Description

CBS News is seeking a Data Journalist for its newly developed CBS News Confirmed team. Many factors present threats to our credibility and to the trust our audiences place in us. As technology changes at an unprecedentedly pace, this dedicated team will ensure that the high journalistic standards pioneered by CBS News are upheld.

The ideal candidate will be a tech savvy journalist who thrives on using data and graphics to tell impactful stories. They'll be excited to pitch, report and build data-driven pieces while collaborating with editors, producers, designers and developers. A heightened curiosity about key news-of-the-day topics, especially critical political events, is key!

The duties of a Data Journalist for the CBS News Confirmed unit will include, but will not be limited to:
• Pitching data-driven stories and graphics.
• Crafting data visualizations based on your reporting and research.
• Partnering with other team members and assist with data research for graphics, including generating political maps.
• Participating in interdepartmental brainstorms, offering feedback and perspective.

Basic Qualifications:
• Degree in journalism, communications or related
• At least 5 years reporting and building data visualizations
• Strong writing and editing skills with demonstrated portfolio of published work
• Experience using quantitative information to tell stories

Desired Qualifications:
• Proven engineering habits, including commenting code and using version control
• Proven skill handling data sets, writing code and crafting impactful graphics in a newsroom context
• Familiarity with a data-visualization library and standard design software applications
• Previous experience collecting and cleaning data using the best visualization practices
• Demonstrated ability to visualize complex ideas in a clear, accurate and intelligent manner
• Ability to multitask and perform at the highest levels under stress and tight deadlines
• Team player who is able to work with a diverse group of people
• Ability to work flexible hours including evenings, weekends and holidays
• Strong writing, grammar and AP style background
• Strong news judgment and instincts

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Hiring Salary Range: $85,000.00 - 95,000.00.

The hiring salary range for this position applies to New York, California, Colorado, Washington state, and most other geographies. Starting pay for the successful applicant depends on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education. The benefits available for this position include medical, dental, vision, 401(k) plan, life insurance coverage, disability benefits, tuition assistance program and PTO or, if applicable, as otherwise dictated by the appropriate Collective Bargaining Agreement.
