Job Description
WHP-TV/CBS 21 has an immediate opening for Assistant News Director to oversee news content for overall fairness, balance and accuracy. The ideal candidate must be proficient in creative writing, copy editing, enterprising stories and be committed to managing compelling newscasts. You must be able to multi-task and have an eye for detail. The ideal candidate will also work with the News Director and other managers to establish newsroom goals and work to develop and further the brand of each station's news programs. The Assistant News Director will work individually with members of the news team to set personal goals and evaluate their performance on a regular basis. As a newsroom leader, the expectation is that the Assistant News Director will lead by example

Responsibilities will include
• Oversee daily newscasts to ensure we are serving our local communities by sharing relevant information to alert, protect and empower our audiences
• Supervise producers and reporters, as well as, review scripts and provide feedback to encourage powerful storytelling
• Collaborate with News Directors and other station managers to create special segments
• Ability to perform well under pressure, experience managing breaking news and meeting strict deadlines
• Ability to identify problems and provide solutions
• Planning and overseeing continuity into upcoming newscasts
• Aggressively lead breaking news and severe weather coverage
• Work Closely with News Director to carry out news philosophy and direction
• Help News Director focus on alerting, protecting and empowering our viewers
• Review daily newscasts to ensure quality control and brand compliancy
• Handle scheduling of news staff
• Oversee Special projects
• Planning and overseeing continuity into upcoming newscasts
• Assist in the on-going evaluation of personnel
• Help with recruiting and hiring for news department personnel
• Other responsibilities as assigned

Requirements and Qualifications:
• Must have a working knowledge of journalistic ethics, libel, and privacy laws
• Working knowledge of I-News & Avid
• Must have a demonstrated ability to manage multiple hours of daily newscasts on two stations and must have a proven track record of success in building a winning news organization
• Journalism degree and a minimum of five years experience in news management with noted leadership skills is required
• Must maintain a valid driver's license and good driving record.
