Assistant News Director

Job Description

WPEC CBS12 in sunny West Palm Beach, Florida has an exciting opportunity for a positive and detail-oriented newsroom leader. We're looking for an Assistant News Director to oversee news content across all dayparts and platforms. In this position, you will work closely with the News Director and other managers to execute the daily coverage plan and support newsroom staff.

Responsibilities:
• Keep the trains running on time.
• Aggressively lead breaking news and severe weather coverage.
• Help content creators find the best way to tell their stories across all platforms in line with our community focus and editorial targets.
• Prepare for daily content meetings with knowledge of reporter pitches, important folos and ongoing stories as well as the news of the day.
• Copy edit reporter scripts.
• Work with News Director and other managers to establish newsroom goals, develop and grow news programs and brand.
• Work with daypart teams and individual staffers to set goals and offer regular feedback.
• Draft coverage plans for major events, elections, hurricanes, etc with the ND.
• Handle news talent schedules and timecards and maintain manager on-call list.
• Work with ND on editorial, policy and programming decisions/changes and ensure they are communicated to all relevant parties in a timely manner.
• Assist in recruiting and hiring.

The Successful Candidate:
• Excellent communicator with strong attention to detail in planning and execution.
• Experience managing breaking news and severe weather coverage.
• Ability to perform and keep cool under pressure.
• Strong writing/editing skills and ability to create engaging content across multiple platforms.
• Solution-oriented.
• Commitment to and understanding of journalistic standards and ethics
• Enjoys working with people and coaching/motivating early career journalists.
• Positive leader who fosters collaboration and teamwork.
• Clear grasp of multi-platform coverage and how to drive digital traffic
• Minimum of 3 years management experience in a television news environment or equivalent
• A college degree in Journalism or a related field is preferred
