The Sacramento Kings seek a Basketball Data Engineering Intern who will contribute to the development of cutting-edge basketball analytics systems. The Basketball Analytics Intern will assist the Kings analytics group through the support, maintenance and improvement of the Kings' internal database . The specific day-to-day responsibilities of this position will vary depending on the basketball calendar, but the role generally involves building, testing and debugging a data infrastructure to answer basketball-related questions. The position will require collaboration with the entire analytics group and other parts of the front office.
Start Date: Summer/Fall 2023
Duration: 5 months/ Full-Time
Compensation: $18/hr
Responsibilities:
• Perform advanced statistical analysis on large datasets in order to assist in the decision-making of the Basketball Operations department
• Improve data pipeline to ensure accuracy and speed of existing analytics resources
• Perform ad-hoc research projects as requested and present those results in a concise, straightforward manner
• Provide administrative support and complete general assistance as required
Qualifications:
• Current enrollment in, or within 4 months graduation from, an undergraduate or graduate degree program in Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, or related field required
• Experience with relational databases and SQL required
• Familiarity with the current state of freely available basketball research preferred
• Knowledge of and experience working with basketball strongly preferred
• Experience with R statistical software preferred including package management
• Experience using Git version control system
• Ability to work independently potentially under tight deadlines and relate to and communicate effectively with people of varied backgrounds (programmers, analysts, outside data vendors, other front office members) required
• Ability to work evening, weekend and holiday hours (as dictated by the basketball calendar) required
• Willingness and ability to relocate to Sacramento and work on site in the Kings Basketball offices
