This internship is ideal for a college senior eager to gain real-world experience in sports journalism. The selected intern will receive hands-on training across various platforms, including on-air sports reporting, digital content production, and multimedia storytelling. This is a unique opportunity to build a solid foundation in both broadcast and digital sports coverage-inside a fast-paced, professional newsroom.
What You'll Do as a Sports Intern at WGNO:
At WGNO Sports, we cover everything from Friday night high school football to college rivalries and professional teams. As our intern, you'll be immersed in the fast-paced world of sports journalism and expected to:
• Report, write, and edit compelling sports stories in line with Nexstar Media Group and Associated Press standards
• Assist with shooting and editing highlights, interviews, and stand-ups
• Post and manage sports content on wgno.com, optimizing it for SEO and timeliness
• Create engaging sports content for social media, including graphics and real-time updates during games
• Pitch story ideas that spotlight athletes, teams, rivalries, and unique moments in the local sports world
• Embrace the challenge of covering breaking sports news and telling impactful feature stories
• Be curious, ask questions, and always look for a fresh angle
• Demonstrate a strong work ethic and a passion for storytelling, especially in a sports context
• Uphold journalistic integrity and accuracy at all times
What We Expect from You:
• A deep love for high school, college, and professional sports
• Strong writing and communication skills
• A willingness to learn newsroom systems and content management tools
• Basic knowledge of editing software (e.g., Adobe Premiere or similar)
• Comfort working with cameras, microphones, and field equipment
• The ability to collaborate in a deadline-driven, team-based environment
• Physical ability to carry equipment and work in fast-paced, often outdoor, sports settings
• Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and game days
• And, of course, other duties as assigned-we're a team and we jump in where needed!
Internship Details:
• This is a non-paid internship designed specifically for college seniors seeking academic credit and real-world experience in sports journalism.
• Interns must be enrolled in a college or university and eligible to receive academic credit for the internship. All required documentation is the responsibility of the student.
• The number of credit hours earned will be determined by the intern's academic advisor and institution.
• Interns will work directly with WGNO's Sports Department, gaining experience in everything from high school and college coverage to professional team reporting.
• Sports Department leaders will oversee your progress, providing feedback, training, and a final written evaluation upon completion of the internship.
• Interns must commit to a minimum of 20 hours per week for 8 weeks, with flexibility to work some nights and weekends based on sports event schedules.
• This is a hands-on opportunity to contribute to Friday Night Football, Sportszone, and digital sports content across WGNO platforms.
