UI/UX Design Apprenticeship

About the Program

Epic Games Apprenticeships are designed to develop, support, and cultivate talent from alternative educational backgrounds and expand access to opportunities in interactive entertainment and 3D engine technology.

As an apprentice, you will be immersed in a year-long dynamic learning and working experience, paired with a strong network of mentors and embedded in a real-world development environment. You will be exposed to daily business at Epic, where you'll work on challenging projects focused on building real-world skills and competencies to ready you for the workforce.

Career Path Overview

This apprenticeship will focus on the UI/UX discipline, pursuing either Technical UI or UX Design. Designers are the creative minds that power our products and help shape the future of interactive entertainment at Epic.
• Tech UI Designers help execute UX and UI's vision in the engine.
• UX Designers define the screen layouts, interactions and flows that make up the ''user experience'' for players.

What You'll Learn and Work on

Apprentices will learn how to help implement UI and system-focused thinking in the Unreal Engine with UMG. This includes blueprint scripting, UMG layout building, possible C++ coding, and creating materials. You will work alongside UI Artists, UX Designers, UI Engineers, and fellow Tech UI Designers, with a dynamic team to help ship features to millions of players around the world.

Specific Tasks May Include
• Assist Tech UI Designers in implementing UI features.
• Translate designs into reusable and modular UMG components
• Work with UX & UI Art to identify UI implementation needs and pass those onto engineering.
• Work alongside engineers, artists, game designers, and UX researchers to redesign existing features
• Translate goals and constraints into compelling player-facing features by conducting user research and brainstorming solutions to challenging problems.
• Create wireframes, interactive prototypes, and documentation for multiple platforms and inputs
• Present and pitch new designs to various stakeholders.

Who We're Looking for
• Candidates age 18+ from non-traditional tech backgrounds, including but not limited to: coding bootcamp grads, candidates looking to re-enter the tech workforce, self-taught coders, or candidates without a UX degree.
• You are a proactive, fast learner who naturally leans into owning outcomes from start to finish.
• Able to collaborate across disciplines ranging from technical to non technical.
• You respond well to constructive feedback
• You demonstrate a collaborative mindset
• You're flexible and responsive to change
• You have strong verbal and non-verbal communication skills
• You understand fundamental visual design concepts

The Apprenticeship Journey
• Step 1 - Apply! Applications will be accepted for this opportunity until February 14th, 2023.
• Step 2 - Selected candidates will speak with a recruiting team member who will learn more about you and prepare you for the interview process.
• Step 3 - Virtual interview with the hiring team will take place on Friday, March 3rd, 2023.. Successful candidates will move to the offer stage.
• Step 4 - Pre-apprenticeship training. You will participate in a 18-week focused bootcamp to prepare for your first day at Epic.
• Step 5 - Begin your work experience at Epic!
