Job Description

The digital multimedia journalist is responsible for co-hosting and producing 5 Live, KTLA's live online-only show. In addition to live on-camera work, the MMJ will help build the show every day, producing, building segments, editing, writing, transcoding video and reporting.

The MMJ must be able to present stories in video form with clarity and ease, all while maintaining the highest levels of quality when it comes to reporting, sourcing, transparency and journalism ethics. She or he will be able to host a live news show, report from the field, produce segments and post videos to KTLA.com and other platforms. Building segments from scratch, developing recurring franchises, working with guests, editing video and improvising on camera are skills critical to this role. Experience working on a small team is preferred.

The MMJ will have a strong knowledge of anchoring and reporting, non-linear video editing, web publishing systems, news production, as well as a mastery of spelling, punctuation, grammar and AP Style. Will also be detail-oriented, organized and able to prioritize and comfortably multitask under tight deadlines. He or she must be able to follow directions, perform duties, share the spotlight, thrive in a team environment and make independent decisions. The applicant must understand news values and story structure.

Familiarity and comfort with Facebook, Facebook groups, Instagram and Twitter are required, and the candidate should understand how social media is an asset to a news organization. She or he should also be willing to experiment and follow new developments in social media.

Candidates are preferred to have experience with Photoshop, iNews/ENPS/OPUS, Adobe Premiere, fostering online communities and talking with viewers/social media users in Southern California. She or he will be or must quickly become highly knowledgeable about Southern Californians' news priorities and specifically KTLA viewers' interests.

Qualifications: A bachelor's degree, preferably in journalism or communication, and at least three years of relevant work experience in journalism are a must. Previous experience in a newsroom, especially on a digital platform or in local television news, is preferred. Candidates should have prior on-camera experience and include a reel as part of his or her application. The candidate must have excellent command of the English language, both verbal and written. The individual must be able to work various shifts and times, including early mornings, nights and weekends. The ideal candidate will have a familiarity with online and social media metrics and analytics, and a passion for journalism excellence and the will to compete and win.
