News Director

Job Description

The 5 Live director is responsible for directing 5 Live, an already established daily livestream news show airing on KTLA's website and mobile app Monday through Friday.

She or he will help build the show every day, producing segments, editing, writing, transcoding video, reporting, and most importantly, switching the show in real time. Candidates should have experience directing a live news show, executing a rundown in real time, adjusting shots and feeds, and responding on the fly to breaking news.

Duties include operating a switcher, stacking a rundown, playing out clips, editing video, monitoring and adjusting an audio board, establishing camera shots, directing hosts and field producing original segments. Proficiency in other disciplines, including producing, writing and appearing on camera, are strongly preferred. Experience working on a small team is preferred.

Candidates should have strong news judgement, an understanding and love (or strong opinions) on Southern California and the ability to handle the demanding deadlines of a newsroom. Knowledge of internet culture and trends is a plus.

Candidates should be detail-oriented, organized and able to prioritize and comfortably multitask under tight deadlines. She or he must be able to follow directions, perform duties, share the spotlight, thrive in a team environment and make independent decisions. The applicant must understand news values and story structure.

Qualifications:
A bachelor's degree, preferably in journalism or communication, and at least two years of relevant work experience in journalism are a must. Previous experience in a newsroom, especially on a digital platform or in local television news, is preferred. For candidates with on-camera experience, a reel should be included in the application. The candidate must have excellent command of the English language, both verbal and written. The individual must be able to work various shifts and times, including early mornings, nights and weekends. The ideal candidate will have a passion for journalism excellence and the will to compete and win.
