Title: Technical Broadcast Specialist (Onsite)

The Job

This position works in a 24 X 7 X 365 control room environment, requiring teamwork, focus and the ability to work under pressure. The Technical Broadcast Specialist is directly responsible for monitoring and troubleshooting transmission paths for 88 outbound Entertainment and News Satellite and Fiber delivered broadcast video networks. Respond to stream health alarming for fulltime and ad hoc content distributed to iStream Planet. Implementation of system redundancies via a monitoring and control system. Guided by standard operating procedures and policies, fully document all anomalies and outages. Collaborate with various engineering groups and master controls as necessary.

The Daily

Monitor

Monitor and respond to alarms for 88 linear fiber, satellite & IP delivered networks for Entertainment & News. Respond to alarms for ad hoc and fulltime content distributed to iStream Planet. Alert and notify appropriate engineering group and Master Controls of any anomalies and issues. Take necessary action for implementation of compression and teleport system redundancies via a monitoring and control system. Maintain high level of proficiency in the utilization of: Evertz Vue, Crystal M&C, Videobridge, Medius, spectrum analyzer, Volicon.

Troubleshoot

Investigate and make determinations of the root cause for any anomalies or discrepancies discovered, utilizing all test equipment and methods available within designated demarcations. Additionally, coordinate with other groups to determine the location and/or source of the issue. Collaborate with engineering groups to investigate issues outside of demarcation points.

Collaborate

Work directly with multiple engineering, master control, and distribution control groups to communicate, describe and resolve issues. Work with management in resolution of technical and administrative issues, planning schedules, creating SOPs. Work directly with outside vendors to notify, troubleshoot, resolve and document issues affecting the delivery and distribution of our networks. Spin up and man conference bridges as needed to support day to day operational responsibilities and maintenances.

Documentation/Procedures

Document all anomalies including discrepancies on and off air, general maintenance, video and/or audio loss, cue tones, closed captioning, equipment problems, and times of issues. Record interactions with other groups and outside vendors, including all details and times. Assist management with SOPs and improvement of systems. Additionally, act as overnight help desk for Distribution Technology, taking all their overnight calls, interfacing with Compression and Teleport Engineering, and providing them with all pertinent information. Maintain high level of proficiency in the utilization of the Discrepancy System. Knowledge and full understanding of all procedures and standard operating procedures.

Collaborate with other groups and provide support for implementing BCP workflows and implementation of Xmatters major incident communication plan as necessary.

Regularly check and ensure that all signal components, video, audio channels, closed captioning, cue tones, and ancillary data are in place and meet specifications.

The Essentials
• Prior experience with live traffic Satellite and fiber delivered video systems
• Must have a good understanding of signal flow, system design, and able to follow drawings
• Basic knowledge of MPEG-2, MPEG-4, J2k, multiplexes and conditional access

Required Education
• 4 year degree in engineering discipline or military communications background and/or 4 year experience in broadcast television environment

Desirable/Preferred:
• 8 years in a broadcast television environment
• Knowledge base Mpeg encoding systems: Cisco, Arris, Harmonic
• Video routers, video multi-viewer systems
• CAD / Visio background/M&C systems
