Job Purpose

To develop, support and execute strategic initiatives with a focus on monetizing WBD Network Biz's full portfolio in the Japanese media market including Ads Business. Traditional TV media consumption habits are changing, and content delivery is fragmenting, but this is creating new opportunities in both the television and the digital media space. This is an exciting time for the WBD as we transition to a 360 degree direct-to-consumer business powering people's passions. We are ambitious about growing and reshaping our presence in Japan and the Asian region. As Associate Director of Monetization Strategy and Business Development you will be responsible for navigating new business opportunities and models to monetize our products and content, developing the strategy and executing the business development.

Associate Director Core Responsibilities

This role reports to the Head of Revenue for WBD Networks Japan, based in Tokyo, and will be an integral member of a team for new business, including product and content. While the others in this team will represent the points of view of consumers (research and insights), product and content, the Associate Director of Monetization and Business Development will be charged to think and operate across the 2 group to develop new business models and partnerships in order to grow and/or monetize our products and content.

The role will be involved in developing country-specific strategic initiatives for Japan, and their execution. Projects are varied but include / have included:
• Strategic planning and execution for B2B2C partnerships with other platform providers to grow subscribers and/or monetization of our digital products
• Strategic planning and execution of strategic alliances and commercial partnerships for our advertising and creative solutions business
• Strategic planning and opportunity generation for new business opportunities outside core content distribution and licensing – inbound content licensing and co-production, consumer products, location-based entertainment, etc
• Strategic analysis to support M&A projects, especially in early business and pipeline development, screening opportunities and in due diligence processes
• Assess markets, competitors and competitive change with regards to the business

The role would be expected to independently deliver sections of larger projects cross-functionally and take the lead on some region-specific projects with peers across Asia Pacific.

Specific responsibilities include:
• To support in framing and structuring new strategies and business opportunities:
• Lead the team articulate the right questions and challenges
• To contribute creative and strategic thinking on projects and to challenge existing perceptions
• Conduct research and gather input from all relevant functional teams
• Liaise with local and/or central teams to source, collate and analyse data, support any independent research required (with our research and insights team)
• Develop robust and complex analyses to drive strategic insights and support business execution, including scenario-driven models, competitor analysis
• Generate and deliver strong internal presentations and/or memos that deliver strategic insights, analyses and recommendations to support business decision making and investments, with immediate reporting line and cross-functional stakeholders
• To support the business development and execution:
• Develop leads with potential partners, meet and explore opportunities and analyse winwin for either commercial partnerships or more
• Prepare and deliver business pitches and presentations to potential partners. Develop compelling story lines to highlight the win-win of partnership
• Develop key terms for business partnership, understanding our global position and key terms, while understanding the local market conditions and the partners' needs
• Present and negotiate key terms with potential partners; internally seek and receive any required approvals of key terms, or socialize deals with regional or global management or peers
• Liaise with and lead legal negotiation process with partner, partnering with WBD's legal department and other key stakeholders
• Once partnership is signed, support overall partnership management while identifying the right internal team and processes to scale and operate the relationship
• To support other requests from the Head of Revenue, other Japan Leadership Team members and regional management on emerging issues related to business monetization and business development

Capabilities
• Bachelor or master's degree, preferably MBA, from a top tier university
• 10+ year experience in a professional services environment (strategy consulting) or business development, with a proven track record in developing strategy and executing business
• Previous media or marketing experience highly valuable, especially in sports or other passion verticals
• Independent thinker
• Strong project management skills, with the ability to proactively manage a variety of projects and timelines.
• Ability to assess priorities and maintain composure and diplomacy at all times
• Strong inter-personal skills and confidence in liaising with senior management and other stakeholders
