Job Description
WHO WE ARE

Vox.com, Politics and Policy team

Vox.com brings clarity to audiences. We cover politics and policy, technology, culture, identity, science, health, and an array of other topics.

Vox.com is part of Vox Media, the leading modern media company. We guide our audience from discovery to obsession. We inspire essential conversations about what's now, what's next, and what's possible.

As a community of journalists and storytellers, business professionals, creators and technologists, we believe it is a moral and business imperative to amplify voices: to cultivate diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout our organization and media. This applies to our candidates, our teams, our storytelling, our creative work, and our platforms, products, and partnerships.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

Vox.com is looking for a weekend writer to join our newsroom. The ideal candidate will be able to both write and report on a wide range of stories every weekend. They'll focus mostly on politics, policy, and world coverage, but will be expected to file clear, useful stories on all of Vox's coverage areas, which include identity, science, health, and culture.

We're looking for someone passionate about explanatory journalism, with some expertise in politics, policy, or world coverage, who also has a familiarity with news outside those areas. The writer may need to explain democratic backsliding in Europe one weekend; the next, how the pandemic continues to impact US politics; and the next the ways a given Democratic state is navigating the end of Roe. And they'll need to do so while always being ready to jump on breaking news.

The work is often fast paced, and flexibility is important: Our weekend writer is the first person to handle major news that arises on weekends.

This is a part-time position that will involve working full weekends - 8 am ET to 4:30 pm ET - each Saturday and Sunday.

What you'll do:
• Pitch and write explanatory stories using news judgment and analytical tools
• Write at least one story each Saturday and Sunday
• Collaborate with the weekend editor on:
• Developing sharp frames that fit into Vox's story approaches/formats
• Creating ledes that emphasize clarity
• Thinking through story structure
• Crafting rich headlines
• Choose tasteful and news appropriate lead and embedded photos
• Work with other editors and writers across the site during events requiring special coverage (i.e., a weekend legislative session, a natural disaster, national emergency)

WHO YOU ARE

We're looking for someone with:
• 1-2 years writing and reporting experience
• Strong news judgment and reporting ability, including knowledge of which experts to interview for a given story
• An analytical nature, and a creative approach to angles
• A knack for writing sharp, engaging headlines
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
• Passion for world, politics, and policy news
• Excellent communication skills

If you think you have what it takes, but don't meet every single point in our job posting, please apply with a cover letter to let us know how you believe you can bring your unique skills to the Vox Media team or get in touch! We've hired chefs who became editors, DJs who became UX designers, and sommeliers who became writers.

WHERE YOU'LL WORK

This job is flex. We're dedicated to the health and wellbeing of all of our employees, and we require everyone who works from one of our offices to be fully-vaccinated against COVID-19. Employees with approved religious or medical exemptions may be subject to additional safety requirements, such as submitting to regular COVID-19 testing and/or wearing a face covering in our offices. Regardless of the location you work from, you will be required to work from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm ET.
