Overview and Responsibilities

We're looking for a skilled software engineer to develop ViacomCBS's Roku platform applications. The Software Engineer, Roku will serve as a member of an engineering team and will work in concert with project managers, product developers, designers, brand producers, and their Roku Software Engineering Lead to originate consumer-facing experiences and device-specific data feeds for the Roku platform. They will employ the latest technologies and methodologies to deliver groundbreaking performant offerings for ViacomCBS's emerging platform ecosystem!

The Software Engineer, Roku will develop software using BrightScript and the Scene Graph framework to run on the Roku streaming platform. They will be proactive, diligent, an excellent communicator, and will work well in a collaborative Agile environment.

Responsibilities:
• Roku software development using BrightScript and the Scene Graph framework
• Understanding of the limitations of the Roku platform and how to optimize the app to improve performance
• Work and collaborate in teams with developers, testers, product managers, etc.
• Work with the platform API team to advance app functionality
• Familiarity/comfort with Agile iterative development processes
• Communicate task estimation and progress regularly to a project manager/scrum master
• Familiarity with Jira, Confluence tools
• Commitment to delivery of timely results
• Flexibility and willingness to learn
• Practice self-management of own work and ask questions at need to achieve objectives

Basic Qualifications
• Strong web programming/web scripting skills
• 3+ years as a Roku developer
• Proficiency with BrightScript and Scene Graph Framework:
• Deep understanding of threads in Scene Graph and how to optimize rendezvous between task thread and render thread
• Familiarity with Roku native UI components like rowList, markupList and markupGrid
• Familiarity with Roku Video Node and understanding of how to debug streaming related issues
• Strong Roku debugging skills
• Experience with Test Driven Development

Additional Qualifications
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Familiarity with Roku certification checklist and review process
• Familiarity with the Roku developer blog
• Previous experience building applications for other OTT/Smart TV devices
• Experience performing load tests
• Experience with the development of Chromecast applications
• Experience with CI tools like Jenkins
• Participation and past success in hackathons
• Contributor to open source
