Job Description
Variety is seeking a Deputy Photo Editor to contribute to our print products, including the weekly magazine, special print supplements, and more. This senior role requires an experienced and a proven visual storyteller through the medium of photography.
The Deputy Photo Editor will be comfortable working collaboratively in a fast-paced environment while balancing various sections of the book, working on multiple issues at the same time. They should be versed in resourcing imagery from multiple resources, including studios, image libraries, through personal publicity agents and more, and be creative in finding visual solutions to illustrate stories across all areas of entertainment that Variety covers.
This job is 85-90% photo research. Image research covers a wide range of topics and eras, from new releases in all media formats (music, television and film and news) to archival imagery.
Seeking candidates based either in New York or Los Angeles, reporting to the Visual Director, and requiring close collaboration with the photo editor and design team, based in Los Angeles, as well as section editors and the broader team.
Qualifications:
• Minimum 5 years of publishing experience, with in depth experience and knowledge of photo research resources
• Versed in rights/permissions, and usages of various types of photography and images related to print and web
• Excellent communication skills, including the ability to articulate editorial concepts and ideas
• Attention to detail and demonstrated love of photography
• Experience in producing and directing celebrity photoshoots. Fluent on a photo set and comfortable working with talent, publicists, and style teams.
• Ability to team lead internally, and nurture and develop relationships with new talent to shoot for the magazine
• A strong network of industry connections with studios, networks, publicity firms and artists
• Deep interest in the entertainment industry as it relates to photography and the history of Variety's coverage
• Proficient in working with K4 systems and DAM photo organization tools and photoshop
• Established relationships with personal, network and studio PR
As PMC values in-person collaboration and team cohesion, employees work onsite 4 days a week and 1 day remotely with a focus on maintaining a vibrant and inclusive culture.
Typical wage range: $87K - $97K. Factors that could be used to determine your actual salary may include your specific skills, years of experience and comparison to current employees already in this role. The total compensation package for this position will also include other elements, a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits including 401(k) eligibility and paid time off benefits.
