Job Description

The Department of Theatre and Dance at the University at Buffalo, The State University of New York (UB) invites applications for a Clinical Assistant Professor with a specialization in Music Theatre. This is a full-time (10 month) non-tenure-track faculty position with an emphasis on teaching, undergraduate recruitment and artistic service. The initial appointment will be for a three-year term with opportunity for renewal based on performance, College need, and available funding. The primary responsibilities will include:

  • Teaching undergraduate courses in Music Theatre repertoire, history, and audition techniques;
  • Directing and/or choreographing for department musicals (specific to the expertise of the candidate); and,
  • Providing leadership and vision in the area through curriculum and policy development.

The ideal candidate will have an established or emerging reputation within the multifaceted world of Music Theatre, and will work collaboratively with program faculty to shape and deliver a curriculum that prepares students for success in today’s theatre industry.

We seek a colleague with the passion, skill, energy, and enthusiasm to recruit a diverse population of students with clear potential for success in the Music Theatre field. Additional faculty responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Mentoring student projects.
  • Identifying guest artists, and building strategic relationships with professional theaters, casting directors, and producers.
  • Faculty are expected to maintain regular office hours and contribute to department and system-wide committees.
  • Other service to the Department may include Music Theatre Area Direction, and participating in community engagement initiatives and interdisciplinary projects within and outside the University.

Minimum Qualifications

  • BA/BFA in Music Theatre, Theatre or related area.
  • 1-3 years higher education teaching experience.
  • Experience with stage directing and building a musical theatre cast at an advanced level.
  • Demonstrated educational expertise, working with diverse populations and pedagogical approaches.
  • Working knowledge of Actors’ Equity Association (AEA) standards and best practices.
  • A secondary area of practice is desirable and may include but is not limited to: Dance and choreography, multimedia and film and video production, composition, orchestral and pit conducting, musical arrangement playwriting or lyric writing, physical acting, stylized and period text, working knowledge of the voice as an instrument.

Preferred Qualifications

  • MFA or PhD in Music Theatre, Theatre or related area.
  • Industry connections and active performance credits with Broadway and Equity companies.
  • Experience developing a student centered curriculum and learning outcomes from a contemporary social, cultural, and pedagogic lens,
  • Experience with student retention, recruitment, and auditions.
  • Commitment to furthering community engagement initiatives.
  • Experience and interest in collaborating on multi-disciplinary projects.
  • Online teaching experience, experience teaching a large seated course and/or general education curriculum.
