Job Description
TEGNA, a leading provider of local media and award-winning journalism, is seeking a vice president of consumer marketing. This role will move the consumer marketing agenda forward for the company, helping drive linear and digital growth in 64 local journalism brands in 51 markets. This role will play a major part in helping TEGNA fulfill our purpose to serve the greater good of our communities.For this highly visible leadership role, we are seeking an experienced local marketing leader with an appreciation for local journalism who wants to apply their leadership, creative, digital and strategic marketing skills to guide and inspire our team of 300 field marketers. This important role also leads the company's internal design team. It requires a good balance of right and left brained thinking as well as strategy and execution.
Candidates should possess a passion for the local news and information genre. They should also be comfortable managing geographically dispersed teams, influencing without authority, presenting to a variety of stakeholders, and developing strategies tied to product marketing, brand marketing, news marketing, digital marketing, and affiliate marketing. Candidates must be comfortable working interdependently across a large matrixed organization, have a bias for action and be resourceful in terms or generating ideas that can be implemented in fiscally responsible ways. They must hold themselves to high professional standards, have a good sense of humor, check any ego at the door and quickly earn the respect of their colleagues.
The ideal candidate operates with a sense of urgency in the present and, at the same time, looks 6-18 months ahead to bring organization, order and planning to the larger marketing collective. The ideal candidate is an effective communicator who can present and justify points in a clear, concise manner. They have excellent verbal and written communication skills and know how to tailor communications to targeted audiences. They can organize and develop effective presentations and use strong storytelling techniques to sell ideas/media plans/budgets/strategies. They effectively manage across the organization, forging strong relationships with a variety of colleagues. They understand how to identify and scale best practices across a large enterprise.
Responsibilities:
• Implement TEGNA's long term consumer marketing strategic plan with a focus on our people, brands, research and marketing operations.
• Bring a lens of diversity, equity, and inclusion to ensure our strategies, programs, marketing product and content reflect the communities we serve.
• Ensure consumer marketing is a key partner to the content organization and contributes to overall goals and key performance indicators. This requires collaboration with the corporate content team on initiatives tied to TEGNA's content transformation plan, e.g. launching new on-air and digital products, building affiliate toolkits to help local stations with key promo tables, etc.
• Partner with local general managers, marketing directors and other field leaders to advance content transformation and grow audiences. This ranges from completing pilot programs to consulting on internal and external priorities, planning events to evaluating creative and more.
• Lead a team of marketing strategists and the company's in-house design team such that they deliver high quality work, in a collaborative environment, to drive audience growth.
• Deliver both long-term planning and day-to-day operation of the consumer marketing function. This entails proactively evolving the unit's strategic plan, overseeing the unit's marketing calendar, assigning projects and holding team members accountable for execution.
• Lead the company's focus on local brand health, which includes but is not limited to managing TEGNA's relationship with our brand agency, developing and leading multi-day training summits for field leaders, curate weekly consumer marketing office hours, evangelizing our brand approach, interfacing with our in-house design team, consulting with stations as needed to move their local brand forward, presenting brand health research, etc.
• Represent consumer marketing both within the organization and externally, as needed. Collaborate positively and productively across the company with teams ranging from editorial to sales to technology to creative and more. This includes and is not limited to attending content/news meetings, delivering presentations, resolving conflicts as they arise, etc.
• Lead and collaborate with local research teams, corporate research staff and 3rd party vendors to garner audience insights and translate those into effective, measurable marketing strategies.

• At least 15 years of consumer marketing experience with proven record of success in the local media/television/news industry, with progressive increases in responsibilities and roles over time.
• Proven track record building a local newsroom's linear ratings and improving digital performance.
• Demonstrated passion and respect for local news, the First Amendment and quality journalism.
• Experience leading brand marketing, digital and performance marketing, media planning and measurement.
• Demonstrated record of leading effective integrated advertising campaigns from concept to completion.
• Experience leading media planning with overall understanding of co-op spending and building productive partnerships with network, syndication and other 3rd parties.

• Experience working with a sense of urgency in a deadline oriented, fast paced team environment
