We are seeking a skilled and collaborative Virtual Art Department (VAD) Artist to join our virtual production team. As a VAD Artist, you'll play a pivotal role in shaping the visual direction of our productions by creating real-time assets and environments within Unreal Engine and other industry-standard tools. At the intersection of content creation, optimization, research and real-time performance, you will be supporting lookdev, procedural content, and on-set creative problem-solving as part of a cohesive and dynamic team. You'll collaborate closely with production leads, creative stakeholders and stage operators to make sure environments and designs are progressing according to the creative direction, and ensure content lands on stage ready for previsualization, scouting, and in-camera VFX.
Key Responsibilities
• Collaborate with production designers and directors to interpret concept art, storyboards, and scripts into 3D virtual environments
• Design and build modular assets, environments, and sets optimized for real-time workflows (Unreal Engine)
• Support early-stage look development and previs needs
• Contribute to layout and world-building using production references and photogrammetry data when applicable
• Integrate concept art, CAD, and scan data into cohesive virtual scenes
• Participate in virtual scouting and camera blocking sessions
• Optimize assets for performance and real-time render requirements
• Support version control and file management using tools like Perforce or ShotGrid
• Work cross-functionally with the virtual production, mocap, lighting, and visualization teams
Qualifications
• Proficient in Unreal Engine (latest version preferred)
• Strong modeling, texturing, and layout skills using Maya, Blender, or similar 3D software
• Experience with real-time asset optimization (polycount, LODs, lightmaps)
• Strong understanding of art direction, composition, and cinematic environment design
• Familiarity with pipeline tools (Perforce, ShotGrid, or similar)
• Strong communication skills and a collaborative mindset
• Experience with photogrammetry, LiDAR, or scanning workflows (preferred)
• Blueprint scripting or Unreal Engine tool development (preferred)
• Knowledge of virtual production workflows (LED volume, ICVFX, etc.) (preferred)
• Matte painting or 2.5D projection skills (preferred)
• Experience in architectural visualization or set design (preferred)
$110,000 - $140,000 a year
This salary range is specific to applicants applying to our position in Vancouver, BC. To determine your base salary, we consider your qualifications, skills, and experience. These considerations can cause your compensation to vary outside of this range and will also be dependent on your location.
