Job Description

The Conservatory of Theatre Arts at Purchase College, SUNY seeks candidates for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor in Sound Design, beginning in the fall of 2023. Applicants to this position should have substantial expertise in sound design across multiple performance media, which may include theatre, film, video, etc., and an understanding of the needs involved in creating a BFA degree at the university level.


We are seeking a colleague who is professionally active in the theater / sound design industry and who possesses a deep and detailed understanding of how to prepare our students for a professional career. Our ideal candidate will be an established artist with significant experience in current and past practices in sound design and professional training for theatrical designers, with demonstrated enthusiasm for development of interdisciplinary curricula in sound design for music, film, and dance students. Successful candidates will demonstrate their commitment to student learning and success, mentorship at the college level, and to conservatory training within the context of an undergraduate institution housing a unique combination of liberal arts and sciences and conservatory arts degree programs. Purchase College is an undergraduate institution located 25 miles north of New York City, and committed to engaging, learning-centered instruction and service-learning activities.


Qualifications: Appropriate terminal degree (MFA) or professional equivalent and three to five years’ experience as a professional Sound Designer for live theatre, and demonstrated effectiveness in leadership towards teaching are required. The successful applicant’s C.V. will also reflect significant achievement within the professional world. Familiarities with college theatre production within a conservatory setting, and experience with sound design for film, television, and music production are considered assets. Responsibilities include teaching and academic advising of BFA students within Conservatory’s Theatre Design/Technology program, leading the development of a Sound Design curriculum, and community service (which encompasses committee work as well as College, Conservatory, and department governance). USA 829 membership is desirable but not required.

The Conservatory of Theatre Arts at Purchase College, SUNY, contains three academic departments (BFA Acting, BFA Theatre Design/Technology, BA Theatre & Performance) and produces an annual season of around 20 unique works of theatre at a variety of production scales. This season includes fully-realized productions directed by guest artists with significant materials budgets and BFA student design and technical teams (approx. 10 shows/year), as well as student-produced projects with extremely limited departmental support (approx. 10 shows/year).
