Job Description
The Production Editorial department of the Penguin Publishing Group is seeking a self-motivated individual to join its team. The production editor will oversee all aspects of the production cycle for nonfiction trade and hardcover titles, including cookbooks, workbooks, and other heavily illustrated two- and four-color books.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
• Style manuscripts for design and typesetting
• Works in close conjunction with editorial, managing editorial, design, and production to create timelines and troubleshoot project-related concerns and issues
• Work directly with authors on occasion to resolve specific text-related questions, and integrate author feedback into manuscript or layouts
• Responsible for hiring and managing the work of freelancers (copyeditors, proofreaders, and indexers)
• Works on and reviews all phases of text from manuscript through blues (copyedits, proofreads, reviews all freelanced work, etc.)
• Copyedits and proofreads all stages of cover production, from cover copy to printers' proofs
• Reviews promotional and galley-related materials
Essential Qualifications/Requirements:
• At least three years of production editorial experience
• Previous experience working with illustrated titles and other complex books (exercise, health and wellness, journals) a plus
• Ability to prioritize multiple assignments, work well under pressure, and consistently meet tight deadlines
• Self-motivated team player with good critical-thinking skills
• Must be able to work and review work electronically using the track changes function in Word and mark-up tools in Adobe Acrobat
• Previous experience working on books with extensive back matter a plus
• Familiarity with cookbook styles and conventions preferred
• Highly detail-oriented, with thorough command of grammar, spelling, punctuation, and usage
• Knowledge of The Chicago Manual of Style
