Junior Designer / Random House--Harmony/Rodale
The Random House Publishing Group is seeking a Junior Designer to join their talented team of design professionals. In this role, you will work closely with Art Director on book cover designs for the Harmony Books and Rodale Books imprints. Harmony Books publishes nonfiction books on wellness, psychology, science, and inspiration written by the most distinguished authorities, journalists, doctors, and scientists in their fields. Rodale Books publishes nonfiction by cutting-edge experts and innovators in the fields of health and fitness, self-improvement, career, relationships, parenting, spirituality, cooking, and lifestyle.
The Essentials:
The Junior Designer will report to the Art Director and provide a wide range of design and administrative support, as well as begin designing their own covers. The role requires a combination of excellent skills in the areas of design/typography, problem-solving, organization, and ability to communicate across various departments. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone with a desire to learn the process of creating book covers and become familiar with the overall publishing process.
Specific responsibilities include:
• Designing and routing jacket and cover mechanicals (layout design), and seeing through to production stage
• Designing original covers and jackets
• Preparing files, reviewing and correcting proofs with the assistance of senior staff
• Making reprint corrections
• Assisting with image research and licensing
• Converting hardcover designs to paperback format
• Fielding interdepartmental requests
• Keeping track of deadlines and budgets and updating database with book-related details
• Communicating with editors, production editors, freelancers, and external departments
With this in mind, to be successful in this role we feel that you'll need to have:
• 1-3 years of professional design experience
• Genuine interest in book cover design
• Strong skillset in design and typography
• Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, and Acrobat) on Mac platform
• Ability to work independently and communicate effectively (verbal/written)
• Ability to manage multiple priorities in a deadline-driven environment
• Experience preparing files for digital and print output
• Retouching and color correcting skills
• Strong organizational skills with attention to detail
• Familiarity with design trends and commercial market
• Familiarity with and/or interest in prescriptive health/wellness genre
• Familiarity with Procreate (preferred)
• Illustration ability (preferred)
