Editorial Director, Fiction (Hybrid)

The Crown imprint of Penguin Random House seeks a Fiction Editorial Director. Reporting to the Publisher, the Editorial Director will solicit, acquire, develop, and edit works of fiction, and will, with the publisher, help curate the list.

Crown has long been known as a publisher of distinguished hardcover fiction and non-fiction. Its list of notable authors includes President Barack Obama, Michelle Obama, Chris Whitaker, Ina Garten, Liane Moriarty, Rachel Maddow, Gillian Flynn, Erik Larson, Matthew McConaughey, Sally Rooney, Timothy Snyder, and Matthew Desmond.

This is a hybrid position with in-office responsibilities 3 days per week. We will consider candidates who can work from a commutable distance to our offices at 1745 Broadway, which includes the tri-state area (NJ, CT, & PA).

Responsibilities:
• Acquires and develops new book projects.
• Supervises fiction team: in coordination with the publisher assesses potential value of fiction submissions, runs P&L scenarios, schedules, crafts publishing strategy and presentations.
• Attends book fairs and networking events.
• Works with authors on drafts, outlines, and revisions of manuscripts, including structural and line edits.
• Consults with the art, production, and managing editorial departments on schedule, design, and packaging of books.
• Works with publicity and marketing departments on book campaigns.
• Develops and maintains author, agent, and publisher contacts and engages in developmental work with authors.
• Tracks manuscripts through all stages of editing, design, and production.
• Prepares title information sheets; writes and edits copy.
• Keeps abreast of trends and competitive titles.

Requirements:
• Minimum of 7 years of book editorial experience and a solid track record of acquiring and shaping commercially successful books
• Strong understanding of competition and the fiction marketplace
• Strong line and conceptual editing skills
• Excellent communication skills, verbal and written
• Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills; ability to attend to detail
• Established relationships with literary agent community
• Established relationships with bookseller community
• Ability to work independently, under minimal supervision
• Strong negotiation skills
• Ability to work closely with authors 

The salary range for this position is $100,000 - $150,000. All positions are currently eligible for annual profit award or bonus, subject to company results.
