Book Production Manager, Penguin Publishing Group (Open to Remote)

Book Production at Penguin Random House seeks a Production Manager to join the Penguin Publishing Group (PPG) division, working across several PPG imprints, including Viking, Pam Dorman Books, The Open Field, Penguin Life, Portfolio, Sentinel, Optimism Press, and Thesis. In this role, you will work with a Senior Production Associate, Assistant Production Director, and an Executive Production Director on a list of approximately 35-40 titles seasonally consisting of mostly 1/C hardcover originals. You will move a book from manuscript through finished book stages, collaborating with design, inventory, and managing editorial. You will play an important role in ensuring that books are produced within budget, delivered on time, and are of the highest quality.

The Penguin Publishing Group encompasses titles that connect with all audiences-whether that is through global bestselling authors Leila Slimani and Amor Towles; Pulitzer Prize–winning nonfiction authors Robert Samuels and Toluse Olorunnipa; popular fiction titles like The Giver of Stars by Jojo Moyes; life-changing books such as The Body Keeps the Score by Bessel van der Kolk; or impactful motivational titles like Start with Why by Simon Sinek.

This experienced Production Manager will be part of a fast-paced and collaborative group. Should have a hands-on understanding of 1/color and 4/color trade hardcover and paperback production and experience dealing with multiple vendors, including compositors and component printers. The role is ideal for someone who is highly organized, can handle multiple tasks at one time in a deadline-driven environment, and is interested in further managing the bookmaking process from the phases of paperback and hardcover book production.

The Role:
• Consulting with the managing editorial, production editorial, and art & design teams to develop the specifications and schedules for individual titles.
• Entering/updating book specs in SAP.
• Creating estimates and profit & loss statements.
• Issuing purchase orders for each assigned title and approving necessary costs and invoices.
• Working closely with vendors, including compositors, component printers and printer/binderies, with troubleshooting, schedules and deliverables.
• Trafficking materials and proof passes internally and with outside vendors.
• Examining book samples and ensuring quality benchmarks are maintained for each book product.

The Essentials:
• Minimum of 4 years of hardcover production experience; trade paperback experience a plus.
• Ability to manage multiple responsibilities in a deadline driven environment
• A comfort with numbers and basic math skills
• Excellent communication skills
• Strong organization and scheduling skills
• Excellent attention to detail
• Proven experience working with multiple vendors, including compositors and component printers
• Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
• Knowledge of SAP, Adobe Acrobat, FileMaker Pro, Box, InDesign, and Photoshop a plus

The salary for this position is $70,000. All positions are currently eligible for annual profit award or bonus, subject to Company results.
