Book Interior Designer, Penguin Random House

Book Interior Design at Penguin Random House seeks a Designer to join the teams at Crown Publishing Group and a Designer to join the team at Penguin Publishing Group. Reporting to a senior member of the team, the Designer will be responsible for the execution of all stages of interior book design for trade paperback and hardcover titles. This role provides an opportunity to collaborate and work alongside a talented team of designers and book production experts.

In the Crown Publishing Group, the Designer will help produce eye-catching interiors for the preferred publisher of presidents and celebrities. Crown is renowned as the go-to publisher of narrative and idea-driven non-fiction. Crown and Crown Currency are responsible for some of the most high-profile publications of our time, including Michelle Obama's Becoming, Susan Cain's Quiet, Matthew McConaughey's Greenlights, Matthew Desmond's Evicted, Greg McKeon's Essentialism and Erik Larson's The Splendid and the Vile.

This talented designer should be ready on day one to take a manuscript and shape it from the design concepts and through all subsequent passes to the finished book. Most of our trade titles print 1-color, so typography, proportion, and a fine touch are all central to creating an interior design that supports the read rather than distracting from it. Even in a 1-Color trade world, there is a wide variety of voices, subjects, and formats. Crown titles often feature charts, graphs, and art-either within the text itself or in inserts.

In the Penguin Publishing Group, the Designer will work closely with a roster of bestselling and award-winning imprints, including Ace, Avery, Berkley, Dutton, Plume, Putnam, TarcherPerigee and Tiny Reparations Books. The Penguin Publishing Group encompasses titles that entertain all audiences--whether that's the global franchises of Best-Selling Authors, Tom Clancy and Lisa Scottoline, championing new nonfiction voices like Everything's Trash, But It's Okay by Phoebe Robinson, popular fiction titles like Book Lovers by Emily Henry and Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens, life changing books like Atomic Habits by James Clear or finding humor and whimsy in gift books like Tiny But Mighty, by Hannah Shaw.

Creative and adaptable, this self-starter will be day one ready with the design skills to take a MS from design sample pages to a finished book, be up for the challenge of taking on wide range of content from complex self-help titles, beautiful novels, graphic novels, journals, coloring books and some special projects such as decks and equipped with a strong work ethic to learn and grow in all aspects of interior book design.
Our ideal candidate is highly motivated, enthusiastic about publishing, and enjoys reading broadly and often. We are looking for a detail-oriented, meticulous self-starter who loves books of all types and is invested in the process of bringing them to a wide readership, has strong writing and analytical skills, communicates clearly , is comfortable asking for help when needed, and wants to be an active participant on a collaborative team.

A resume and cover letter are required to be considered for the role. Portfolio links or PDFs should be linked to your application in the ATS, and please remember to provide passwords, if applicable.

• Create original designs for titles across multiple imprints, genres, and formats.

The Essentials:
• Two years of experience in interior design for mass market or trade books
