Associate Editor/Editor - Dutton Books (Hybrid)

Dutton, an imprint of the Penguin Publishing Group, seeks an Associate Editor or Editor to join the team. This role will report to the VP, Editorial Director and will acquire and edit fiction, focusing on upmarket and commercial fiction across genres. There is also the opportunity to consider select nonfiction and to acquire for Dutton's other imprints, Plume and Tiny Reparations Books.

A small list with a huge audience, Dutton is a boutique imprint within the largest English-language publisher in the world. Recent titles have become bestsellers, been national book club picks, and won the National Book Award. Publicity and marketing driven, its focused list of sixty books per year is made up of half fiction and half nonfiction titles. Dutton's imprints include Plume and Tiny Reparations Books .

Current bestselling and award-winning fiction authors at Dutton's imprints include Mateo Askaripour, Fiona Davis, Jonathan Evison, Hank Green, Jessa Hastings, Tami Hoag, Asha Lemmie, Grace D. Li, Jason Mott, Ana Reyes, Riley Sager, Adriana Trigiani, LaToya Watkins, and many more.

The ideal candidate will be a meticulous editor, a prompt and thorough communicator with a sharp eye, someone who will consistently pursue and attract new authors and have strong agent relationships. The role will be fully involved in the publishing process from submissions through production and publication. This is an excellent opportunity to establish and nurture relationships with agents, authors, foreign publishers, and others in the writing and publishing community.

Specific responsibilities include:
• Soliciting, acquiring, and editing books for publication.
• Working closely editorially with VP, Editorial Director on select titles.
• Working with the publicity and marketing teams to package and position books.
• Acting as the in-house liaison between editorial and the production, design, art, and managing editorial departments, as well as the sales, marketing, and publicity teams.
• Reading with other Editors as they assess projects, as needed.
• Communicating with authors and agents in all phases of the publishing process, from acquisition to publication date.
• Effectively representing own list as well as the imprint to media, booksellers, foreign publishers, literary organizations, and other out-of-house contacts beyond authors and agents.

• Minimum of 4 years of publishing experience in editorial acquisitions for a general trade publisher
• Strong editing capabilities and deep curiosity about issues, ideas, and storytelling
• Established contacts in the agent community
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills and presentation skills
• Strong interpersonal skills with the proven ability to negotiate with authors and agents
• Proven ability to set priorities under pressure and multi-task effectively
• Excellent attention to detail
• Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Google Drive, Adobe Acrobat, and Microsoft Outlook

The salary for the Associate Editor position is $63,000 and for the Editor position is $70,000-$72,000. All positions are currently eligible for annual profit award or bonus, subject to Company results. Please apply using our online application process and include your cover letter and resume.
