Standby Technician - Network Operations Center

Team: Distribution, Infrastructure & Operations

Status: Part-time/Temporary

Provide operational support of the distribution systems located at the PBS Technology Center in Springfield, Virginia on an as needed basis.

Essential duties will include, but are not limited to:
• Monitor multiple program distribution feeds through a control room using automation control of video server playback to air. Monitor multiple program streams fed via satellite to PBS member stations

• Perform quality control and routing for incoming live remotes. Coordinate communication with remote origination facilities and relay appropriate information to PBS control room personnel

• Monitor program caching into video servers and initiate appropriate corrective action if the material is not recording correctly. Report issues pertaining to media transfers and missing media

• Review material previously recorded on video servers prior to control room playout

• Access and troubleshoot on air problems in the control room or transmission area and immediately initiate an appropriate corrective response

• Log operational problems by issuing an air discrepancy report or equipment work request

• Maintain transmission logs

• Monitor the technical performance of the automation system and associated devices

• Monitor the technical performance of the video servers and associated playout and record ports

• Modify automation schedules (playlists and record) to accommodate last minute changes

• Perform technical evaluations on program submissions to determine if the material conforms to the PBS Technical Operating Specifications (TOS)

Requirements for success:
• Minimum two years of prior master control experience in a broadcast or cable tv environment

• BA or BS in television production, communications or related discipline; or industry experience

• Excellent computer skills, including familiarity working in a client/server environment; knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook

• Knowledge of digital television, video, audio, automation, tape, video servers and other television equipment

• Familiar with computerized control room automation and the use of video servers

• Previous experience with Omnibus automation and Miranda i-Control monitoring and control system

• Must be able to perform multiple job functions in a professional, and collaborative manner

• Ability to prioritize workload to accommodate shifting deadlines is required

• Must possess outstanding critical thinking and troubleshooting skills

• Make informed and appropriate decisions under pressure – requires excellent stress and crisis management skills

• Must be inquisitive and self-directed

• Superior customer service /client and teamwork skills

• Must be able to work any shift in a busy 24 hour, 7 day a week on air operation

• Must have excellent attention to detail

• Public television experience a plus
