Position Overview:

The Assistant Director of Multiplatform Programming assists the GA Programming team in managing day to day editorial and audience development activities for digital projects across PBS, with a particular focus on content for the PBS flagship YouTube channel, PBS podcasts and social video content for TikTok and other vertical formats. This position supports the team in executing the multiplatform content strategy by coordinating digital-first projects and non-linear extensions to GA programs. The Assistant Director would work closely with the Head of PBS Digital Studios, Senior Director and VP of Multiplatform Programming, and other editorial leads to identify opportunities for digital programming, especially on YouTube; and to advise on best practices for a cohesive multi-platform strategy.

Key responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
• Work closely with Senior Director of Multiplatform Programming and other staff to execute editorial responsibilities for PBS's multiplatform content including:

• Work with PBS stations, production companies and other partners to develop new series concepts across YouTube, TikTok, podcasts and other key digital platforms for PBS

• Review rough cuts and approving final videos, offering feedback to producers, ensuring that all content meets PBS' editorial standards

• Work cross-functionally with the GA Multiplatform Programming, PBS Digital Studios (PBSDS), PBS Social and PBS Digital & Marketing teams

• Collaborate with the Head of PBS Digital Studios, Senior Director of Multiplatform Programming and other GA Programming colleagues further develop multi-platform content strategy

• Coordinate multiplatform content initiatives that feature multiple digital components occurring simultaneously (e.g. projects with a YouTube and social video component running alongside a broadcast series)

• Implement online video and social media best practices on digital channels across PBS, especially the PBS flagship YouTube channel

• Produce, edit and repackage segments from longform PBS content for release on the PBS flagship YouTube and other digital channels

• Experiment with new digital platforms and emerging formats beyond YouTube, including (but not limited to) TikTok, podcasts, OTT, VR, Instagram Reels and others

• Assist with grant proposals for current and future multiplatform initiatives

• Work with the team to develop editorial best practices and tutorials that assist in content and audience development at the national and local level, including through presentations at PBS meetings and digital media conferences

• Work with the Senior Director of Multiplatform Programming, Head of PBSDS and PBSDS Director of Audience Development to build communities around specific multiplatform projects and PBS at large

Requirements for success:
• 4 years professional experience working for media organizations or nationally recognized brand(s) via digital media initiatives (content development, social media, communications, etc.)

• 3 years of experience working with a digital team (content creation, online publishing, or social media)

• Bachelor's degree in Film Studies, Journalism, Liberal Arts, STEM subjects, Communications or related fields

• Experience producing and editing digital video and building audiences around educational or fact-based content, especially on YouTube

Skills and Abilities required:
• Demonstrated skills and drive to create content that educates, entertains and inspires

• Ability to deliver thoughtful, actionable feedback for video and audio content, scripts and series concepts

• Experience as a creator on YouTube, TikTok, podcasts and/or other digital platforms is a major plus

• Must be familiar with educational content across different platforms, especially YouTube, TikTok and/or podcasts

• Must demonstrate an understanding of audience development strategies for YouTube and other online video platforms

• Video editing skills required

• Must be well-versed in the creative and technical aspects of digital programming

• Ability to cover sensitive or controversial topics with nuance and editorial integrity

• Superior written and oral communication skills (experience writing for online video and social media preferred)

• Graphic design skills are a plus

• Experience in public media is a plus

• Ability to thrive in an independent work environment

• Positive attitude and superb organizational skills

• Proven ability to build consensus and work effectively within teams

• Commitment to the PBS mission

• Must have received or be willing to receive the COVID-19 vaccination by date of hire to be considered. Proof of vaccination required.
