Job Description
OVERVIEW

Across our organization, we're building a workplace where collaboration is essential, diverse voices are heard, and inclusion is the key to our success. We are committed to doing the right thing in our journalism and in every role at NPR. This means that integrity, adherence to our ethical standards, and compliance with legal obligations are fundamental responsibilities for every employee at NPR.

As part of the NPR digital products team, you will serve as product lead for NPR's mobile apps, a critical platform for engaging the NPR Network's massive national and local audiences. You'll work closely with technologists, designers, newsroom leaders, and business stakeholders to set priorities and execute a smart, valuable product vision for the apps (iOS and Android) and their cross-platform connections (auto and TV platforms, web-based deep-linking, back-end services, and more). Through collaboration across NPR and its Member stations, you'll lead the prioritization and roadmap process for experiences that drive mobile engagement, grow the diversity of our digital audiences, encourage subscription and membership, and help our consumers get the most out of NPR apps and the NPR Network at large.

Responsibilities
• Manage the product plan and roadmap for the NPR mobile apps. Serve as product lead on our mobile apps team, working daily in a cross-disciplinary Agile process.
• Partner with the build team (software engineering, design, editorial, revenue subject-matter experts, and others) to establish requirements for the best consumer experience.
• Collaborate with leadership to iterate mobile's national, regional and local role in the NPR Network. Communicate effectively within and across divisions, creating buy-in for the product vision.
• Serve as primary evaluator and prioritizer for mobile's many incoming needs. Maintain expert-level understanding of a diverse audience's needs and how NPR can deliver value.
• Work closely with other product teams to generate cross-platform journeys, engaging new and more diverse audiences and generating deeper relationships with NPR.
• Define metrics and systems to track product performance. Clearly communicate performance and use data to evaluate and prioritize roadmap.
• Iterate with design and insights teams on usability studies, research and analysis to develop new and innovative requirements that enhance audience diversity and satisfaction.

What We Are Looking For
• Platform proficiency - significant experience and awareness of current iOS and Android ecosystems, in terms of form factors, key features, opportunities, extensions, and innovation of media experiences.
• Excellent communication skills - demonstrated success in building cross-organization and partner collaboration and earning buy-in for product decisions.
• Excellent consumer intuition - through experience, internal data and industry awareness, places the audience at the center of digital engagement opportunities.
• Implementation aptitude - ability to discuss product architecture (technical, design and business) and translate strategic concepts into detailed requirements and execution.
• Strong analytical and quantitative skills - comfort in leading data-driven decision making and collaborating with partner and analytics counterparts.

WORK LOCATION:

This is a remote permitted role. This role is based out of our Washington, DC office but the employee may choose to work on a remote basis from a location that NPR approves.

Qualifications
• 5+ years experience in product management or similar digital product development.
• Experiences with mobile apps and large, consumer-facing digital platforms are strongly desired.
• Experience working on Agile-enabled or similar teams.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills. Proven ability to present complex ideas and products to a large group and author compelling product materials. Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues who are unfamiliar with the software development process.
• Understanding of the creative process in a collaborative environment; ability to incorporate both internal stakeholder and user feedback; team player who can work in a fast-paced environment, always showing respect for the diverse constituencies at NPR and within the public radio system.
• Strong organizational skills and ability to work under tight deadlines; ability to multitask and self-manage the deadlines of competing projects.
• Fluent with the challenges facing journalism organizations in the digital media space, including evolving business models, news ethics, and user privacy and data needs.
