Team Background

The Ads Engineering team builds applications that handle the process of creating, managing and delivering ads. We use them to reach the right people around the world to get them sign up for Netflix or discover an amazing Movie, TV show or Documentary that they would enjoy. And we do all this at an enormous scale while using a lot of data and intelligence.

Our systems are directly responsible for the promotion and reach of Netflix's marketing to our present and future members off-service. Our efforts reach millions of people every day on social media platforms, video sharing websites like Youtube or publishers like The New York Times, IMDB, Allocine and millions more globally.

Our work is directly impactful in the growth and success of the company and we are one of the most sophisticated advertisers in the world. Our team has contributed significantly towards causal attribution in marketing. We've helped reshape the industry by partnering with some of the world's best companies in the advertising space.

We build cloud services, tools, and products that work together to automate a bevy of needs for our marketing around the globe. Here are a few of the problems that we tackle :
• Automating production, localization and QC of an extremely large number of ad creatives
• Creation and orchestration of complex marketing campaigns on external platforms
• Experimentation and management of A/B tests
• Utilizing ML models to optimize budget allocation, ads personalization and audience targeting

Job Description

We are looking for a strong generalist backend engineer with a passion for building scalable, high-performance, distributed, fault-tolerant web services.

Some of the things we'll be looking for :
• You have built and operated large scale web services and systems successfully and helped grow and evolve it over a length of time.
• You have worked closely with front-end engineers and handled several kinds of system integrations working with other cloud application and infrastructure teams. You also enjoy working closely with product managers and designers.
• You have an excellent instinct for product development and in building products and applications that aim to delight users.

Lastly, you look forward to collaborating directly with our colleagues in marketing to observe, learn, build an intuition for the domain, discover opportunities and amplify both your own creativity and of those around you.

Required Skills / Experience
• You possess a BS/MS degree in Computer Science or equivalent with 5+ years of experience in backend development.
• You are adept at building concurrent applications with JVM based languages such as Java, Scala, Kotlin, Groovy, Clojure.
• You are experienced in utilizing SQL (MySQL, Postgres, MS SQL Server or other) and NoSQL data stores (Cassandra, Elasticsearch, HBase, Redis etc.) and in modeling and evolving domain-specific application data.
• You have prior experience in using RPC systems, IDLs, message queues, distributed coordination systems, and other tools that help in building distributed systems.
• You are strongly motivated in picking up new domains and shipping high quality, elegant, well-tested code through a combination of functional and object-oriented programming.

Nice to have
• You know the digital advertising space and experience in ad-tech systems such as ad servers, real-time bidding platforms etc.
• You have a working understanding of machine learning and in productizing ML-based data models in web applications.
• You have used data processing solutions such as Hive / Spark / Pig/ Presto or their equivalents.
• You have developed applications and microservices using cloud computing platforms such as Amazon EC2 or Google Compute Engine.
