Counsel, Business & Legal Affairs, Animation Film
Los Angeles, CA
We're working hard to bring even more of our original series programming to our viewers worldwide - and while Netflix (as the studio) produces some of this original series programming in-house, a significant portion of our original series programming is produced by, and licensed from, third-party studio partners (including some of Netflix's most popular and award-winning scripted programming, including Ozark, The Crown, Cobra Kai, and Black Mirror).
The Original Series Licensing Business & Legal Affairs team manages all aspects of the business and legal relationships with Netflix's third-party studio and production partners that produce scripted original series for Netflix, and the team handles (from the offer/development stage through and including production) the negotiation and drafting of all agreements for any licensed Original Series projects originating from Netflix's various US-based creative teams (Drama, Comedy, etc.). We are currently seeking an energetic and intellectually curious lawyer to join our team.
This role is a combined business and legal affairs role, and will work closely with the other business and legal affairs execs on our team, as well as with our creative executives, to structure and negotiate deals and draft agreements necessary to develop, produce and/or license Netflix's US-based scripted series, from script development through post-production and exhibition on Netflix's global streaming service. The candidate should be extremely comfortable counseling creative executives and making decisions that have both business and legal impacts, and should be adept at developing and fostering relationships with his/her third-party studio counterparts. The candidate will also closely collaborate with Netflix's various internal teams including Finance, Production and Post-Production departments. The role is based in Los Angeles.
Four (4) to seven (7) years of experience at a firm, studio/production company and/or distribution platform (streaming network/SVOD platform a plus), with a focus on business and/or legal affairs in the scripted television space. The candidate should have direct experience drafting and negotiating acquisition/distribution licensing agreements for scripted series, and - ideally - business affairs/legal affairs experience negotiating and drafting development (including rights acquisition) and production agreements for scripted television programming production.
The successful candidate will also possess the following:
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
• Strong analytical capabilities and judgment.
• Strong negotiation and drafting skills.
• Ability to work proactively, independently and reliably under tight timeframes in a fast-paced environment.
• Ability to work effectively and collaboratively cross-functionally, think practically and be solution-oriented.
• Willingness to tackle matters outside area of expertise.
• J.D. and membership in good standing in at least one state bar.
