Responsibilities

Role Purpose

The NBCUniversal Music Business & Legal Affairs department oversees music matters across the NBCUniversal businesses, including Filmed Entertainment and Parks & Resorts. Although this position will be primarily dedicated to NBCUniversal News Group (including NBC News Studios, MSNBC & CNBC) and NBCU OTS (Owned Television Stations, including the Telemundo stations), the Director, Music Business & Legal Affairs may also assist other clients across the business, as needed.

The Director, TV Music Business & Legal Affairs will be responsible for all business & legal affairs/music services reporting into the SVP, Music Business & Legal Affairs. This position does not include any music creative responsibilities including with respect to consulting on music placement in production (i.e.: music supervision).

Job Duties
• Responsible for handling a wide array music business and legal affairs; oversee/support dedicated team
• Draft, negotiate, review, track music agreements including:
• Work-for-hires
• Record label and music publishing waivers
• Soundtrack album agreements
• Long form blanket agreements such as: production music libraries; major labels and publishers recording artist deals; songwriter, music publishing and co-publishing deals; soundtrack distribution, music producer, and composer deals; AV licenses; bill back agreements; and other documents
• Advise clients on, and help find practical and timely solutions for:
• Intellectual property issues
• Copyright infringement, fair use, ephemeral use, parody, clearance, rights-related and regulatory issues, compliance, union issues
• Performing rights, strategy, risk analysis and other issues arising out of programming
• Interact with various production departments on budgeting, invoicing, payroll, union obligations, and deliverables
• Assist and run point on music package creation
• Oversee and process master use and synchronization licensing clearances, payment, and licensing for music uses across NBCUniversal News Group and NBCUniversal Owned Television Stations
• Collaborate across all NBCU platforms in development and implementation of technological solutions to best impact clients
• Conduct employee training in music, copyright, cue sheets, and general business processes
• Maintain tracking grids, cost charts, databases, etc. for all music usage, licensing, and music needs across NBCUniversal News Group
• Implement cue sheet review, analysis, revision, and submission
• Partner with clients, colleagues to implement best practices and formulate new processes

Qualifications

Basic Requirements
• Minimum of 8 years of music business and clearance experience
• Previous paralegal experience and/or JD preferred

Additional Requirements
• Must be willing to work in New York, NY
• Willingness to work nights, holidays and on weekends if needed
• Must be covered by Solutions, NBCU's Alternative Dispute Resolution Program
• Must have work authorization to work in the United States
• Must submit an attestation disclosing your COVID-19 vaccination status and, if partially or fully vaccinated, submitting your vaccination record no later than 7 days following commencement of employment
