Responsibilities
Job Purpose:
The Director, Comedy Development will report to and work with the EVP of Comedy Development to develop new broadcast, cable and streaming series for Universal Television Studio.
Essential Responsibilities:
• Field pitches, identify trends, and help establish the strategic development goals for the Comedy department
• Develop new and current programming, including identifying and securing new talent for projects in development
• Identify new business opportunities, pursuing potential deals where appropriate
• Provide notes on outlines, scripts and cuts
• Oversee the development of internal formats, from initial idea through to creation of episodic bible
• Find and pitch new material to senior management
• Provide notes on story, outline and script for projects in development
• Introduce new writers to the studio with the potential for future development
• Assist the development team in identifying concepts and talent
• Work with Business Affairs to close talent and production deals
• Work with Production to ensure that agreed to concepts are fully realized in production
• Spearhead internal concepting for shows that will expand the brand
• Supervise the production of multiple series
• Work with the Programming department to ensure that agreed to concepts are fully realized in production
• Attend and act as a creative executive on set, and at table reads, run-throughs and tapings
• Build and maintain relationships with producers, directors, and production companies
• Serve as liaison between production and other network departments including publicity, marketing, finance, etc.
Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
• Minimum 6 years of narrative scripted series programming experience in development
Desired Characteristics:
• Bachelor's degree
• Background in programming for the network television and streaming markets with hands-on experience, ideally from both a production and a development stand-point
• Exhibit flexibility, excellent communication skills and relationship building ability
• Assertive, enthusiastic and highly motivated self-starter
• Creative and passionate
• Strong relationships with agents, managers, writers and producers
• Proficiency in MS Office Suite - Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Office
• Strong communication skills and relationship building ability
• Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, innovative, and high energy environment
• Team player who works well with others
Additional Requirements:
