In addition to its iconic monthly magazine and popular digital and social platforms, National Geographic is one of the largest and most successful publishers of single-topic, newsstand-only magazines in the US, taking readers deep into subjects that give them a greater understanding of the world around them and the things they love. The Senior Editor, Multi-Platform Content is responsible for managing the development and execution of a range of these single-topic issues each year, delivering world-class editorial from conceptualization and commissioning through production and publication. She/he/they is passionate about storytelling and story development, and will commission and edit work from contributors to fulfill an extensive publishing calendar across a variety of topics, from history to health to travel to animals and more. In addition to preparing all content for printed editions, the Senior Editor will also adapt this work for digital publication, keeping digital needs in mind while developing plans for print. As a core member of National Geographic's Editorial team, she/he/they works collaboratively with designers, photo editors, graphics specialists, cartographers, and print and digital producers to ensure high-quality work is delivered on deadline and with excellence.
Position Summary:
The Senior Editor is responsible for managing the development and execution of numerous single-topic, newsstand-only magazine issues each year, delivering world-class editorial from conceptualization and commissioning through production and publication. The Senior Editor is passionate about storytelling and story development and will commission and edit work from contributors to fulfill an extensive publishing calendar across a variety of topics, from history to health to travel and more. As a member of National Geographic's Editorial team, the Senior Editor works collaboratively with designers, photo editors, graphics specialists, cartographers, and print and digital producers to ensure high-quality work is delivered on deadline and with excellence.
Responsibilities:
• Manage numerous single topic magazine issues/year in science, travel, history, and other categories, from outline and flat plan development though manuscript review and research stages; collaborate with design and photo on layout; and oversee preparation for handoff to production editor
• Ensure that all pieces of the project come together in a timely manner and adhere to word counts, factual accuracy, and other specs
• Adapt excerpts of published titles for nationalgeographic.com
• Report to Senior Editorial Manager on project development and challenges, assist in title management, including contracts, scheduling, production stages, and administrative tasks, as needed
• Develop, nurture, and maintain new and ongoing relationships with writers and industry professionals
Minimum Requirements:
• Minimum of 6 years of publishing experience that demonstrates increasing editorial responsibility
• Strong attention to detail, excellent organizational skills, understanding of the editorial process
• Excellent writing and verbal communications skills and strong knowledge of the National Geographic brand and mission
• Ability to take overall responsibility for concept and content, as well as manage creative relationships
• Ability to manage multiple projects at once, on deadline.
• Established network of experienced writers with whom you collaborate
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills
• Self-motivated and resourceful, with the ability to work with minimal supervision, problem solve creatively, and exercise independent judgment
Preferred Qualifications:
• Curiosity about National Geographic's core subject areas and the ability to grasp new subject matter quickly
• Understanding of the editorial process from conception to completion
• Proficient in Microsoft Office, Adobe Pro; knowledge of AirTable
Education Requirements:
• College undergraduate degree or equivalent years of work experience
