ILMxLAB builds immersive experiences for Virtual and Augmented Reality and other emerging platforms. Our mission is to tell stories in new ways that leverage real-time graphics on ultra high-end hardware. We combine techniques from film VFX production with techniques from the video game industry to produce real-time experiences of the highest fidelity.

We are looking for a real-time Character Art Department Supervisor to supervise a team of exceptional artists by both personally setting the bar in terms of skill-level, providing mentorship, and managing each artist's individual performance. This role is responsible for leading a team of Character Artists in creating visually stunning and technically performant characters that support the storytelling, animation and interactivity that make our experiences feel truly immersive.

What You'll Do
• Lead a team of real-time Character Artists to accomplish ILMxLAB's mission, through sculpting, modelling, UV mapping, texturing, material authoring and look development of visually stunning, high fidelity characters that achieve art direction and optimization goals, meet the needs of animation and rigging, and enhance the feeling of connection with characters in our experiences
• Set the discipline's standard for artistic and technical excellence, efficiency and performance by creating exemplary character assets that meet project goals, and providing training and guidance to direct reports. Develop and hone the team's skills to continuously raise the quality bar
• Oversee the optimization of character assets to achieve optimal scene performance in the 3D engine and handle troubleshooting the most complex character technical bugs
• Engage in regular conversations with artists to give performance feedback, gauge individuals' interests and support their career aspirations, including cross-functional skill-building. Perform management duties such as annual performance reviews
• Set the cultural tone & reinforce positive behavior within your group. Work with studio leadership to define and continually refine and shape ILMxLAB's culture
• Partner with Talent Resource Managers on talent planning and casting artists to project assignments. Act as hiring manager and liaise with the Recruiting team when new staff are needed. Assist resource management in evaluating potential third-party production partners and collaborate with new partners to establish workflows
• Work with Producers in the planning stages of proposed projects to advise on the scope of the work and resource requirements, and make recommendations accordingly. Work with production to provide task estimates, track progress, and solve production issues that arise
• Establish process and workflow for the discipline, and collaborate with other discipline supervisors to establish cross-functional workflow with other disciplines
• Keep up to date on new tools/applications/trends in the industry and how they can be applied to the character art discipline and workflow
• Define the discipline's 'Lead Character Artist' project role per project. Help project leads solve scope, workflow, etc. issues throughout the project as needed
• Speak on behalf of the discipline in technology development discussions to ensure that new development aligns with the discipline's strategy and workflow

What we're looking for
• 8+ years professional experience as a Character Artist in games, film, feature animation, or related fields
• Has shipped AAA titles or feature films as a Senior Character Artist/Modeler or higher
• Advanced abilities in Maya, ZBrush, Photoshop, and Unreal Engine
• Experience with Substance Designer/Painter, and Mari
• Demonstrated success leading a team of artists on projects
• Experience working with a game engine and implementing 3D work into engine
• Experience with source control via Perforce or equivalent
• Collaborative, team-player attitude: open & receptive to new ideas, constructive criticism, artistic direction and changes
• Experience leading artists to meet deadlines and mentoring artists to help them develop and grow their skills
• Strategic and analytical thinker with exceptional execution and problem-solving capabilities
• Excellent communication skills, especially with regards to illustrating technical processes
• Passion for real-time graphics and emerging platforms (VR, AR, etc)
• Experience being responsible for outsourced work
• Previous management experience with Character Artists/Modelers is preferred

Solid portfolio showing the following
• Excellent understanding of human and animal anatomy, with examples of character and costume designs across multiple styles or genres
• Strong aesthetic appreciation for composition, proportion, mass and volume, light, lighting and color
• 3D sculpting and modeling abilities interpreting 2D concepts
• Strong paint skills, multi-layered materials and effective texture layout
• Clear examples of how to emulate real-world materials in CG while considering hardware performance
• An understanding of garment tailoring, cloth simulation and mesh construction built to deform in a realistic manner in real-time
• Examples of additional relevant techniques a bonus (Including facial blendshapes and correctives, pose space deformation shapes, animated wrinkles and normal maps, hair and fur, body kits and accessories)
