Position Summary
The Layout department at ILM is a multidisciplinary team, encompassing matchmove, body tracking, creative layout and shot assembly. The Lead Layout Artist needs a strong technical and artistic understanding across all three disciplines to effectively guide and support their show team. The role is crucial for ensuring the technical setup, continuity and creative vision of each unique project is delivered successfully, inline with the vision of our clients and VFX Supervisors.
What You'll Do:
Guide the Layout teams to execute high-quality performance ensuring the VFX Supervisor and CG Supervisor's vision is realised.
Serve as the primary liaison with other department Leads and Supervisors to troubleshoot, plan and provide solutions to create outstanding work.
Guide Layout Artists on assigned sequences, providing clear, constructive and positive performance feedback and mentorship to develop their skills, and achieve the best outcomes for the show.
Create work with a strong emphasis on presentation that secures approvals from the VFX Supervisor and clients.
Utilise creative shot blocking, character choreography and environment set dressing to get the highest outcomes for every sequence.
Strategically plan, prepare, and QC work from both in-house artists and outsourced vendors.
Help trial, test and integrate new software, pipelines and workflows to drive technical advancement.
Guide Layout Artists in the creation of rough models and environments, collaborating closely with Previs efforts.
To be a contributing member of this team, you will have a mix of these skills:
7+ years of professional VFX experience, with a minimum of 4+ years as a Lead Matchmove/Layout artist in VFX, commercials or video games.
Proven ability to guide, mentor and motivate a team of artists through complex production cycles.
Deep understanding of photography and cinematography principles, including the effects of different lenses on perspective and visual storytelling.
Exceptional problem-solving skills and the ability to work efficiently under tight deadlines.
Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to articulate technical and creative feedback clearly.
A proven willingness to quickly master new software and proprietary tools.
A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or Computer Graphics, or previous equivalent experience is preferred.
Nice to have:
Practical on-set experience.
Prior experience in Previs or Rough Layout environments.
Advanced knowledge of Nuke, LINUX, 3DE, Maya, front end pipeline knowledge (Asset development, Capture), and/or proprietary tracking software.
